While he/she may be suggesting, you should be telling. Regardless of if you’re an entry level team member or not.
When it comes to these situations I don’t even leave space for someone to squeeze that suggestion in.
I will typically say: “I won’t be available during that week” end of story

In conversation, Inform (don’t ask) engagement lead you are taking PTO for the holidays and if they push back let them know you’ll be seeking other opportunities and to begin preparing for transition once identified (inside or outside org). Reply with summary of your conversation and cc your staffing partner
