I made it to the final round of a recruitment process for a Content Marketing Manager position at a big multinational company in the food industry. I now found out they interviewed another candidate and are going to take the next few days to make their final decision. It's just down to thr 2 of us. What is something creative I can do to stand out at this stage? Would be happy to hear your personal stories too or just your general advice. Thanks!

Hmm, I'm not sure I have any suggestions for you, but I can tell you something I did that hopefully could spark an idea for you. A few years ago, I was interviewing at a creative agency and I went through all the rounds of interviews. I was told they would have a decision by the following week and that I was one of three finalists.

Side story: At the time, the VP at the agency recently authored a book. The book drew parallels between the psychology of failing companies and the psychology of survivalist techniques in harsh environments (such as a plane crash landing in the Himalayas). A lot of their promotions for the book included the book being photoshopped into notoriously harsh environments (death valley for example).

That weekend before the decision week, I went on a trip to Arizona (it was a pre-planned trip). I had already read the book but I decided to take it with me to capture some cool photos of it with some of the Arizona landscapes in the background. I did this and then sent the pictures to my contact at the agency. All I said in the email was something around the lines of "Hey, I went on a trip this weekend and happened to take some random pictures of ____'s book... Some came out better than expected, so I figured I would pass them along. Feel free to use them as fodder on social media if you'd like!" That was it. I didn't ask about the role or anything else. They never responded to the email, but I ended up getting the job and they said they loved that I did that. That alone obviously didn't get me the job, but it kept me top of mind in a way that wasn't annoying or overbearing or otherwise made me look desperate.

My suggestion would be to find a way to stay top of mind with them, but don't go over the top. There's a fine line between something that may sound genuine and something that may sound desperate. Don't cross that line.

Good luck!

Very interesting! That's a clever way to give yourself the slight upper hand in the selection process. Thanks for sharing :)

Write a personal letter to the hiring manager, sending them additional content or case studies that showcase your work, or arrange for a meeting to discuss the position further. If you have any personal stories or examples that illustrate why you would be the best candidate for the job, make sure to share those as well.

You could do something creative like send a portfolio that showcases your work if you haven't already. If you have any personal connections with people at the company, you could reach out to them and ask for advice. Whatever you do, make sure you're professional and respectful.

I’ve worked with agencies for a long time and have seen some super creative ways that people come up with to get ahead of another candidate, even if they’re not more qualified. But since you’re interviewing for a food company I have to share this - someone I was interviewing, in the final round, sent the agency, our team and HR, large cheese pizzas and in pepperoni it was written “Enjoy the Pepperoni. I hope you hire me”. We loved the creativity!
Another favorite, that doesn’t have to do with food, is an interviewee literally sent me a shoe (it was clean!) with their work printed and rolled up inside with a note that said “Just wanted to get my foot in the door.”
Hired both people!!
Good luck - you made it so far you should be proud of that - so much goes into final decisions - I wish you the best!

I would say just nail it on your final interview. I think people have their minds made up by the time you’re down to two people. So I’m my opinion the only thing that can change the outcome is if someone bombs their final interview and it drastically changes someone’s opinion. You got this!
