Creatives

I manage a small team of 4 designers who have been doing a VERY good job for the agency in the past year. I want to be able to give them substantial pay raises (5k-10k salary bump), but given our Econ-climate, it’s not looking great. I’ve considered forgoing my raise so that my team can receive theirs. I don’t love that idea but could make a difference —curious to get another POV on this

I would! It would boost their morale during a time we are all struggling with and show that you support them. I’m assuming you do make more than them and if you would be in a good place financially to go without a bump, it makes sense to go for it. That is certainly a key component of managing. Reward where and when rewards are due. But also make it known that because you see their contributions, does not mean they can ease up. Also if a salary bump is not doable, see if they can get more pto days.

I’d bet the raises would be life changing for them, and likely an inconvenience for you. If it feels like your instincts are right, go with it.

The sign of a true leader. I applaud you OP. (It’s awful that you would have to forfeit your raise since you obviously earned it)

Thanks for the feedback; seems like the right thing to do. But I will admit I’m selfishly concerned that it may hold me back a little with my own salary trajectory. We’ll see how it goes

Love this! My only feedback is that maybe there are non-monetary gains that maybe you could share with them. The assumption is that everyone wants more money, but in reality that’s just one of many things that people want out of their career. What does each individual want? Maybe they want work life balance, title, the ability to work on new interesting things. Money is great and I don’t think anybody would turn down a raise (Especially now). If you’re looking for ways to motivate your team, start with understanding what they want. You might be surprised by their answers. Or not. What the hell do I know?

Split it 5 ways, 4 & you. I keep hearing it’s a team of people. If you’re getting acknowledged and rewarded in a monetary way, why shouldn’t they?

I just want them to have larger gains this year. I want them to feel the relief and joy of worrying a little less about how shit is going to get paid. I remember how closely I had to watch for payday when I was their age. It was such a victory to make it through the pay period with $70 in my account. I know money won’t but happiness—but it can give you peace of mind.

Is your raise set? That’s money you can allocate? If you’re willing that says enormous thing about you as a team player and leader. One thing: you’ve probably considered this but if this happens, they can never find out it came from you. You can say it came from raises you recommended, but you can never say you passed on yours for it. If upper management is good that will give you great equity as a manager and team leader.

If they’re not getting raises, you shouldn’t be either. Good for you for looking out for your team.
