I managed to catch a number of horrible viruses plus covid between October and November. Had to take about 4 or 5 days off in total and my hours and performance suffered as a result. In December I was diagnosed with post-viral fatigue (couldn’t even walk to a shop without feeling horrible) and got signed off for 10 days + reduced hours return. My target was reduced to take sick leave into account. Currently with covid AGAIN. I’m going to be 50 to 100 hours short of my reduced target (cont.)

Be up front with the firm about your health issues and why you didn’t make the hours. If they give you a hard time you’re at the wrong place. You aren’t in a platoon storming Normandy.

like

I have never heard of any firm / partner giving an associate a hard time because they failed to meet billables due to health issues.

I think sometimes in this profession we create drama / anxieties when in reality there is absolutely no way that what you are worrying about would play out. This is one of those times.

As above, be straight up about it. All partners / HR / every human knows that if the shoe was on the other foot, they would want to be given some slack and have their health be the priority. As a result, you won’t cop any grief - more likely to cop some concern about how you’re coping and whether you need a reduced target for the first few months of the year too.

like

Unfortunately, I have. Some people even go as far to say “it’s your job to make sure personal issues do not affect your work”. They need to be reminded.

like

You should chill on whatever it is you’re doing to catch covid 2x in a quarter and whatever other viruses you said you had.

likefunny

As in, are the hours and stress (or whatever else) worth the illness?

like

Address it head-on. Something I’ve learned is that very few people will even care about you’re feeling, let alone defend you.

I suggest you tell them you’re aware you fell short on hours/work this year, that part of this was due to your ongoing health issues, and you’re working to have that solved in the future. And thank them for any accommodations they’ve made for you, if any. If you don’t address it, some a-hole will make sure they remember you were not there at such and such times.

like

Thank you all so much for your feedback and advice. It is extremely helpful. I have just never ever been this sick (or nowhere near it) before and it is almost unbelievable to me that I caught covid again a week before Christmas. So I guess I am wondering if someone out there thinks the same. All of you are immensely reassuring.

FYI: double vaccinated since August. I wear a mask. I only went out for a quiet dinner on Saturday to celebrate my 30th birthday with 3 other friends. We all took tests beforehand and were negative. My partner is still negative. I am guessing my immune system is so broken by now I am catching everything and anything…it’s a nightmare…

like

Sorry that happened to you. Take care of yourself.

Im really sorry to hear this. Hope you feel better. Please don’t stress about this though. Address it head on as noted above. If you get any pushback for getting Covid then this is a telltale sign that you should consider leaving this firm.

like

Are you vaccinated? Do you wear a mask?

like

My Christmas is ruined and in addition I am really worried I won’t even be close to hitting the reduced target. All of my team plus HR know how unwell I have been and I will need to raise this on my final review. Any idea how to approach it or how damaging this may be for my progress? :(

My goodness that’s awful.

In my experience HR wouldn’t want to go anywhere near punishing you for something like this. If the partners you work with perceive these as excuses because you are lazy, I could see this affecting your progress. If everyone is sympathetic to your health issues, I think you would generally get a free pass.

Good luck and try to rest, this job isn’t worth your long term health.

NYC Freelancers! My Medicaid is ending soon and I need to start making health insurance decisions (lame). My current agency is offering me FT and I’m pretty terrified as I feel like I’m going to sell away my freedom. Their health insurance is pretty good and allows me to put my partner on it. I’ve never really felt this way pre-pandemic but now no matter what I do (workout, talk to friends, yoga) I still feel waves of sadness. I also haven’t traveled or gone on many social outings since last March so Ik that is taking a toll on me as well

Considering moving into this apartment complex, and it's a gorgeous little gem and recently renovated, but I just learned that it's a former WWII US Army medical facility... So, like, I'm not super into ghost stuff, but it's kind of eery to imagine sleeping in the same room where some poor WWII soldiers might have gotten their feet amputated or whatever. That, and apparently the leasing office isn't great. All that said, should I go for it? 🤔
