Liveup to your word. It’s all you got in life. Your reputation and integrity. Bite the bullet and don’t back out. Talk budget and contribute. She can’t blindside you with a choice as well. So stand up and talk about it.
Yes, completely realize I can’t back out of this one. Only thing from here is to discuss budget. Thank you!

Completely salvageable....just say you thought they were talking about a $200 couch and not an $800 couch, then say “hey we are both broke right now, let’s go look at even cheaper options first and work up from there?” No worries at all, you guys will be fine 👍
On a side note, don’t take it personally that all the accountants from Big Four making a big deal about your age. They are all pissy right now as they wasted years in college and getting their CPA just to have layoffs and a salary freeze put in place this year.
I completely forget how shocking the age part can be to some people (some can be not so nice thereafter), so thank you for commenting this - actually very much appreciated 😊 Plus your feedback on the situation is very helpful!

Why don’t you just discuss budget? It’s really easy to just say “realize we didn’t align on budget, I’m thinking x, does that seem doable for you?” And go from there.
I love this prompt, very helpful. Thank you for this, really appreciate it!
How are you a senior strategist at 21
You don’t have to justify or explain how you got where you are to us. Its not even related to your original post.
This doesn't sound right lol. She just sold her couch for $ and now expects to buy another $500-$800 couch? Tell her you're both broke (unless she just got a job?) but can afford a Facebook market place couch.
Chief
$500 isn’t really that expensive for a couch. Something off of Facebook marketplace is probably gross and you’ll need to spend money on professional cleaning anyway

Just be honest? If she gets all mad, screw her.

Somethings not adding up lol how are you a senior whatever and only 21?
VP1, I agree, I have a ways to go. Obviously, I’m a bit younger and still have a lot to learn - not denying that.
I wish I had your life skills at this age, who knows, maybe I’d have been a VP too, and not just a “senior marketing strategist” 😊
Since you havent discussed exact amount to put down, why wouldnt you talk about it ?
You are not backing out if you say the max amount you are willing to put in. Your roommate needs to check with you on the budget if not you have to tell them, as simple as that.
“Sorry, I should have been more clear on budget before. I was thinking something more along the lines of $X to fit within my own personal budget.”
Also, there are other arrangements, like if she buys it fully, you pay more rent for X months / the rest of the lease. Totally fair for you to push back in general. You didn’t agree to a $
