I might have the opportunity to move from a plaintiff workers comp firm to a prestigious firm in a plaintiff and defense role for personal injury. The expected ratio is 40% plaintiff and 60% defense. Does anyone have experience in practicing both sides simultaneously? Is it difficult? Do you enjoy working both sides? Any insight is appreciated. Thanks!

I couldn't stand Plantiffs work defense is better but your clients usually aren't good guys. I'm getting ready for mine to be indicted in a securities fraud case. He's probably as crooked as they come third time for the same thing. But at least you're not an ambulance chaser.

I couldn’t ever stomach being a defense attorney. Constantly towing the line between your supposed client, the insured, and your real client, the insurer. If you are devoid of human emotion, you should have no problem with defense work. I cannot see anything rewarding about arguing for a lack of accountability, showing that the insured’s premium goes to an inadequate and sometimes bad faith defense, and a “win” be destroying another person’s life. This is probably why defense attorneys are some of the more miserable attorneys I’ve met.

Yeah not super happy about this one but in plaintiffs I felt that I was always in rule 11 territory.

Agreed^

Not in this field, but in general, I think experience representing both sides is going to make you a better lawyer, able to understand/anticipate all the arguments the other side is going to make... because you’ve done that too. Especially at more junior levels, and you can figure out what you like and specialize more later.

Yaaaaaas. As a practical matter: Defense salary (hopefully) but the plaintiff’s work should give you a break on complying with insurance billing guidelines all day everyday. This is my dream!
