We all do. We only love creativity. But still skip commercial if poss.

Yes my agency has taught me this fast. I love coming up with ideas, and to me it's more about the process than getting them made. Seeing them in the world is a bonus. Actually doing work I care about (thinking, building, writing) gives me joy. The feeling of winning awards or getting press for it is fast and fleeting at best, empty at worst. And during this pandemic BBDO NY has taken my stamina from me. I've metaphorically killed myself for work that goes out our door but not the client's. Or at least not in the form I want to show. And I don't have time to find the joy in my work anymore because I'm always thinking about the other four projects due at the same time. So without: - The joy of being able to peacefully be creative - The pay (my salary is lower than industry averages) - The perks OP mentioned above - Clients actually making cool stuff we show them - A fair work-life balance What do I/we have here? Why am I squeezing every part of myself out for this agency? Having to say "no" daily when PM's, Account, and even creatives continue to make unrealistic requests and feeling anxious about saying no for hours after. Sigh.

Figured out early that I hate it. Also figured out that very few jobs that I’m qualified for and good at pay 200k+. My personal time hobbies and trips I can afford to take thanks to advertising make up for the annoyance of my job.

Find an early stage startup that you believe in, with a founder who believes you can be a difference maker. Join up, enjoy the ride, cross your fingers they go public.

Do you hate the business, your agency, your role? I hated my agency and knew that I could not make money doing pure print production. I changed agencies and moved to the IT side. Still in "advertising" with the same buzz and energy, just in a different role. Think about what you like or don't like and go from there.

Happy for you!

Quit you job. Quit your agency. Quit your title. Quit your career. Find a spouse. Find a dog to adopt. Or see if you can win a goldfish from an arcade. Otherwise have a kid. Buy a house or switch apartments. Try out a new restaurant. Be lazy and just get it delivered. Explore a hobby, pick up bowling or golf or see if you can make heeleys popular again. Invest in crypto and take a risk or just find a really good therapist. Try envisioning your job drastically different and see if it makes you happier or if it gives you the clarity of what you should do next. Or don’t and just whine about it to family or friends or coworkers or people at the bar who didn’t ask. Who knows what’s next. But this isn’t everything. Your job isn’t uniquely cynical or uniquely hard. You probably just care about it a lot and that exposes you to more emotional risk. Take a week off and see how you feel coming back to it. Or don’t come back to it at all. It’s all good. Odds are need to make it like 70-80 years on earth and a job’s part of that. Make an active decision how big a part of that it’s gonna be for you. Phone it in if you want. And don’t worry: There’s cool shit on Netflix whenever you realize this shit just doesn’t have to matter as much as literally anything else in your life even if it involves long hours that don’t amount to much. Good luck. Everyone who matters is rooting for you.

How did you become a creative director before realizing this

Oh, no, I have known this for a few years. Just coming to a head now without all the good parts (fun productions, some semblance of office culture, having my coffee order taken 5 times a day at an edit….)

Hi fam, I need some advice. I have an offer to leave consulting to go to a “startup” I’m really excited about. That said, the comp is on the lower end of what I was hoping for (slightly lower than what I’m making now, including equity) and there’s a very good chance I’m getting promoted to manager next month at my current firm. No room to negotiate TC so that’s off the table. I’ve interviewed for a few FAANG roles (which didn’t work out for a mix of reasons) with TC much higher than...

Anyone feel super awkward around their team when they’re trying to develop you? My manager and leadership keep telling me that they see me owning the workstream I’m on soon and that I’ll be managing the project in the future and that I have big things ahead for me at the firm. The problem is that I’m job searching now and haven’t told any of them and it’ll be super awkward when I leave.
