I moved 12 hours for a new job and after 2 months I was terminated for having to take a week off because my son got RSV at his daycare. I’m a single mom and don’t have any help at all and don’t have any new friends to help in the area yet either. I did have papers from the hospital including a note from the hospital doctor asking my employer to allow me the time off to take care of my son. Does this sound like wrongful termination or discrimination against a single mother?

I'm sorry OP, that's awful. Was it your managers decision to terminate you or was the decision from higher ups. I started a new on a Monday and got strep from cubicle mate and i was out wednesday through the rest of the week. My manager, who barely knew me, was concerned for me and just wanted me to feel better. I would expect a good manager and employer to show compassion. You can't help that your son got sick. I would blast them on X or tiktok.

like

That's tough, I'm sorry. I've been in your shoes and I know how alone you are probably feeling right now. As far as wrongful termination, I'm not sure because many companies have probationary periods when you first start during which they can pretty much terminate you for any reason. Can't hurt to call an attorney, though. A lot of times they offer free phone consultations. Good luck!

like

So sorry! I would check out Legal Aid in your area; it sounds like your dismissal was hinky.

like

Popped in to suggest Legal Aid. At the same time, reach out to social service organizations to help you set up unemployment, health insurance, and other needs that you may not have clarity of mind at the moment to think of. I'm so sorry this happened..

like

I am so sorry. I always had struggles as a single mom too. Companies invest so much in human capital, you would think they would be more understanding that an employee sometimes has family responsibilities. Hang in there. It does get better as they get older.

like

Unfortunately if you were still in your probationary period, they can fire you for ANY reason .

like

That is so crazy that the worker isn't protected more. In a situation like OPs, they should have shown compassion.

How effing terrible. THIS is exactly why I'm never loyal to any organization. My interests come first for me, because I don't matter to them.

How many times does a kid have to hurt people before something happens? I work with a student part time at one school before going back to my original school. He got moved because of his aggressions. He hurt one teacher but she was able to just do PT. He hurt a para to the point of surgery. He also did something to the bus attendant but we don't know what. I'm afraid now that he will hurt the teacher I'm with due to seeing what has happened in the past and how it happened.

Burnout is because you did something consistently for an extended period. You can do quick fixes like go on vacation, get some sleep, exercise more. But they may only help temporarily, depending on your level of Burnout.

Try adjusting your approach to work / life to a more sustainable, and ideally, enjoyable balance.
