I moved from audit after a year to TAS. It’s been about 8 months and I’ve gotten pretty poor feedback. I can feel the axe coming soon. Should I move to another firm?

I don’t know where this mindset comes from where people think they can just jump firms and have the problem resolve. Set up bi-weekly or monthly informal feedback sessions with your senior and managers then create structured goals to evaluate yourself on. If you’re being unfairly evaluated then fine, but at least try to lay out an improvement plan.

likefunny

Thank you. That’s very good advice.

Firstly you’re probably not getting fired, at worst a PIP but associates don’t get fired their first year unless you’re actually awful and cannot add any value which I doubt you are. Then Agreed with everyone here about trying to fix the problem not jump. I was in the same situation but before I jumped to advisory. Had awful audit reviews and was on the chopping block. Reflected on it when moving to a new firm and realized I was the problem not them. Nobody wants you to fail here we all want to work with people that make our lives easier by doing a good job.

Communication - if you see something say something no matter how trivial you think it may be it will make you look like you actually are paying attention not just crunching numbers

Inconsistent product - review everything before submitting even if it takes longer. Trust me a manager would much rather wait another 30 minutes then find a mistake within 5 of reviewing. If they find a mistake on the first tab of a data pack why would they think there aren’t many more in the rest of it?

like

So like inconsistency in the work product. I’ve been told sometimes I do great and I take initiative, stay on top of things. I think that’s the only reason I’m still around.

Ex. We get a special project that’s not quite FDD. Managers sends me an email on what they want me to do. I don’t begin working on it until later. Spend a ton of time on it. Then finally ask for help when it’s too late.

Ex. We’re rolling forward a data book and who ever did the mapping before me was doing something very deal specific. I spent way more time than needed. I should have just immediately asked for help.

Ex. I missed something in the request list so I had to go back to the seller with deal fatigue again.

Finally fishies are giving solid advice about how to improve instead of telling people to jump ship as if the problem will magically resolve itself.

like

Tbh, I’d jump ship - grab a pay raise and start fresh. You’d have the benefit of knowing the things you need to work on and a new open-minded team that would not have knowledge of your subpar performance on prior projects.

So far you’ve gotten solid advice. I would say is, realize you’re not supposed to know anything, which means, you can very easily solve your two feedback items.

1) communication - since you’re not supposed to know anything, don’t be afraid of saying something. This means if a) it’s something you don’t understand or b) something feels like it’s taking you too long to do. You can very easily ask for clarity, or ask for advice on how to approach something to be more efficient.

2) inconsistency - before you on-board with a new team, ask if they can provide you any templates or examples of a final work product. This can help guide you in how to structure your assigned tasks. If the issue is that it’s full of mistakes, inconsistent formatting etc, I find that taking a step back helps a lot. Finish the task, refresh your eyes and then do a self-review. Even better, the next time someone goes through your work, ask if you can shadow them and have them provide you an overview of what they are looking for/common mistakes they find.

like

What about your feedback is particularly negative? Have you been able to show any improvement?

Agree with KPMG 1 here. If you’re not enjoying the work then moving firms will not help. Everyone understands that the learning curve is rough in FDD but it sounds like you have two feedback points that are easily fixable. Just try and over communicate what you’re doing to the people you’re working with, raise your hand when you don’t know something and make sure you’re doing a detailed review of your own work before letting others review it.

In terms of the inconsistency issue, are you able to tell which work you do is good and which is sub-par before getting feedback? If you are, I would take a step back and ask yourself why some of your work is higher quality than other work. Is it that you felt rushed, lack of understanding the task, etc.? Determining the root cause is really the only way to improve. If you’re just completely lost and have no idea what the quality of your work is, it might help to walk through what you did with someone after performing each task so they better understand your thought process and can provide specific real-time feedback.

Hi, new to this bowl ☺️ I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to put my money, if not in a regular savings account? I’m so so grateful to have graduated from college over a year ago with no debt and I have minimal living expenses, so I’ve been able to save a lot.
