If you are still feeling sick… and pneumonia is really tough to bounce back from…use your sick days (FLMA). You cannot be denied FMLA as long as you have a doctor’s note. I am sorry you feel unappreciated but that is a the pandemic teachers face. It happens most everywhere. Think about how much the job means to you…don’t leave in the heat of the moment, you may regret it later.
Teaching is the most important career. Every Nobel prize winner, President, CEO, etc began their road to success due to their teachers. We face the most scrutiny, disrespect, and criticism. Our own Administrations are very quick to point the finger, and very slow to give praise.
Only you can decide how much it means to you. I am 52…put in 12 hour days…work at one of the lowest paying districts…have been slapped in the face more times than I can count… The work is what keeps me where I am. My students fulfill me.
So heal, take your time with your decision, make sure you and your parents are vaccinated, And God Bless.

I’m actually not sure, been working for this new district since July and haven’t heard of one yet. When I was in GA I was part of GAE and PAGE

First let me say I hope you are feeling better soon. I’ve had pneumonia no less than four times over the last two years. Make sure you follow doctors orders and get plenty of rest. Have your doc give you a strong antibiotic, that’s the only this that kicks it. No Z packs! Only you can decide when to go back, not the school nurse. I agree with others about a FMLA for you. With that said a FMLA does not mean you will still get paid when you exhaust your sick days. It simply means you have a circumstance that you may need to miss more days than allowed by your district and you can’t be fired for it. I’m not sure what you mean when you say you are mentally scarred, just because you got sick? Only you can decide if you are done with teaching. Try to keep in mind that you love kids while making the decision to continue in education. I wish you the very best. I’m sending prayers and good vibes your way.

Praying for you. See your doctor and follow his treatment plan. Don’t worry about the job. Use sick leave. FMLA.

No advice but I’ll just say no one wins if you exhaust yourself physically and mentally—the health of you and your family is so important. Teaching is great but my opinion is that you come first.

I don’t know if this is the end for you, but if it is, that’s okay. Your health and the health of those you love is most important. Do not be afraid to demand that your well-being is respected.

I am also in a similar boat, kids testing positive at my school but names are kept secret because of privacy. I’ve kept myself and my family safe as much as I could for 18 months now and have never been so close to anyone Covid positive than I am now, in my classroom. It doesn’t seem fair. As a profession, I believe teachers are expected to sacrifice much of our own safety, to protect the kids in the classroom. I hope you consider taking your time to recuperate, use the FMLA, and bring talks up with the Union in regards to the safety of everyone at school. There seems to be a lack of protection, where could it be coming from? For us, it’s kids failing to follow protocols even at their own homes and bringing it to school.

Do you have sick days? Then use them. I’m sorry you feel bad and hope you get better soon. I hope your parents stay well.

like

I’m sorry you’re going through this. It definitely sounds like they are treating you with such disregard. There was a lot of great advice above about FMLA & other solutions. Ultimately you need to put yourself & your family first. It’s unfortunate that students & schools will lose many brilliant teachers due to the mistreatment being inflicted on them by people who do not directly have to face these risks daily.

Isn't exposure to a known airborne contaminate against OSHA regulations in Texas? That sounds like a worker's compensation case to me because you were exposed at school.

No. You should be able to stay out as long as you need to feel at your best. I know, though, in our district, we only receive five days for COVID. If we need to be out longer, we need to eat up our sick days. Perhaps this is what she means?

like

Are you in the union, if so, get with your union rep. Some districts are giving 5 COVID days of leave, so if you use 5 because of having COVID you get those back. Go to your doctor and get a doctors note letting them know when your doctor says it’s safe for you to return to work and not the school nurse. This is a form of bullying.

like

Our district just approved 10 COVID days of leave. I am thankful for a strong union that bargains for our needs! Even though there is no mask mandate, we do have a sensible plan of action in Covid cases and quarantine. I’m glad I received the vaccine because if I’m in contact with someone testing positive- as long as I have no symptoms- I do not need to quarantine. I understand the fear about possibly bringing home the virus to vulnerable family members. My philosophy is to to take steps within our control to remain healthy.

Have your doctor write a note that gives a date that they feel you can return to work without being at greater risk of infection due to a suppressed immune system and send that to you employer. They have to comply with that.

I hope you feel better soon. Your District is not crazy. ADA is a law for a reason. They may put pressure on you to return but do what you medical provider says to do.

like

Until you are confirmed not to have COVID with a test, you can’t work in my district. I needed a note saying my sniffles were just allergies.

like

The school nurse gives the minimum for you to stay away, not the maximum. If you are still experiencing symptoms, stay home. Use the recommended sick days or FMLA. If you go back too soon your immunity may not handle anything extra. It takes 5-6 weeks to get over Bronchitis, I can only imagine what it takes to get rid of Pneumonia.

No one should return until they are healthy. I get it, teacher shortage, but no excuse for that.

Is anyone else’s parents blatantly disregarding covid? My mother is “sick and tired” of covid - and we have my 95 year old grandmother staying with us for two weeks over Christmas. We had agreed to quarantine ahead of time (which I did), but when I got in town I realized she has not been too cautious- even with my grandmother here now. I’m so upset with her and I cannot understand why such a smart person would operate this way. Am I overreacting or is she being extremely selfish?

So Covid incentive payments have finally reach my “big law” Midwest firm. We are non cravath and bonuses have generally sucked but this year they’ve basically doubled the bonus structure which is, yes, totally incentivizing me differently. I’m currently on pace for 1950, but if I average 44 hours a week for the rest of the year, I can make 2150, which would give me an after tax bonus of about $30k or enough to pay off the worst of my loans. Worth it?

In my opinion, he’s way too worried about the public. Anyway we have now been told that we cannot be less than 6 feet away from any child even if we are both wearing masks. The same is true for the children. So how do you teach a child to read when you are over 6 feet away from them? That’s a rhetorical question.
