I need advice. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. 3 years ago I left a small contracting company that I was at for 2.5 years. Because I had an offer with Big 4 & I was chasing brand on my resume - which did open up lots of doors for me. That small company was still to this day one of the best I had worked for. Smart, caring people. Pay was ok, but they had amazing WLB like 9/80. After Big 4, I started at GH for 3 months. Hated it. Quit and left to industry where I’m at now. Continued in comments

The question I would ask: is the work at the smaller company something you do/will enjoy? Seems like you may be seeking happiness in your work which you haven’t found in these past/recent jobs? Many times work happiness is also a byproduct of what may be happening in your personal life. I’ve been at jobs/companies where I was miserable, and I have to admit it was a mix of wrong culture/work fit, as well as my personal life phase. Shifting away helped, but the main reason for regaining my mental wellbeing had to do with my personal situation. Hope you find your peace soon.

Thank you, this is insightful. It’s strange because when I worked at that small company, I was actually going thru a very bad breakup (partner at the time cheated and I took them back, only to do it again a year later) all during my 2.5 years there. Yet, I’d say how grateful I was for that job during that dark time because of my coworkers/manager support. Right now, I feel like I should be happier. I’m in a wonderful relationship, moved into a nice new place. It’s like work is the one thing that’s making me feel not great right now and so I’m fixated on it.

What is it about the current position that you don’t like exactly? How long have you been there? What was it about the job that attracted you to it so that you applied? Are you getting that? It takes time to get settled into a new position and company and the growing pains of adjustment can leave you feeling unsure of your decision and wanting to seek comfort. If you are still within a year of joining this current position, I would take a long look at what is going on before leaving for another company. Otherwise, you may find yourself bopping around unsatisfied but not knowing why.

This makes sense. While I always encourage people to stretch and grow, we also cannot fundamentally change who we are. There was a book that was popular a while ago called “Strengths Finder” that was all about finding what your natural strengths are and doing a job that highlights those because that will set you up for success the most. It said that we so often focus on trying to develop our weaknesses that we forget to find things that highlight our strengths. The reason I share this is that if you are naturally a shy person, that is OK! That is who you are. What you should be looking for is jobs where that quality is the norm and well suited so that every day doesn’t feel like a mental struggle. Good luck!

If you were happy at the small co sure go back, if you’re happy at work you’re more likely to be self motivated and progress

Now, this industry job is cool but I get this off feeling again. Deep in my gut. I never actually felt like this at Big 4. I thought leaving consulting world meant I’d be immediately happier. But I’m not. I’m an anxious, depressed mess. WLB is ok but people work hard here. I feel like half the time I don’t know what is going on and feel like I don’t fit in culturally. I’ve been thinking about going back to that small company next year but idk if it’s a good idea. It’s almost like I’m going back only because of it’s my comfort zone & I’m seeing it in rose colored glasses. I have a lot of friends there still..and they say I’d be hired back no problem ugh idk what to do!

I feel like in gaining technical skills it would’ve. I had expressed an interest in becoming more technical while i was there & I had learned sql on the job. But in terms of monetary growth, I’m not so sure.

Will moving to a smaller company from B4 impact my career as such in the long run? Especially a company which is still growing and has only 150 employees at this moment. It’s not widely known in the market. But, it is growing at a fast pace in the last couple of years. From a work culture perspective, this company offers a lot of flexibility, emphasizes on wlb and employee satisfaction. Been wanting to get out of the toxic B4 work environment. I don’t want to make a hasty decision and regret.

Working as an audit staff in big 4 shared service centre. It's been 2 years. I really don't like what I do there, also it seems I won't like what I'll be doing there even after becoming senior. Thinking of leaving and joining industry once ACCA qualified. (One more paper left). But people around me discourage that growth potential and earnings in industry are way less compared to public accounting. I know that too but I still want to leave. I'd like to stick to core accounting. Thoughts pls
