And now when I get an urgent 5p call for something I need to have sorted out by the morning, it nearly brings me to tears. To pay me less to work more is bringing me to a breaking point and creating the clear need for better boundaries. How do I professionally and diplomatically draw that line in the sand in a role that expects me to always be reachable? How do I, as a new-ish hire in a one-person department learn to say no, or at least ‘not now?’
And how many times have we scrambled to make things happen after hours for things to completely change in the morning? Slowing down is going faster in many cases. And sometimes that saves money, too.
"I really wish I could tackle that, but I've got other commitments tonight. I can take it up first thing tomorrow morning - does that work?" Force others to plan and troubleshoot their ridiculous requests.
You do not owe it to anyone to be always available, I don't care what your role is. We're not saving lives.
Apply this same advice to PTO. I tell people I'm not checking email while I'm out, and I mean it.
I disabled work email notifications on my phone because they were giving me anxiety. I felt like Pavlov's Dog instinctively checking my phone with every 'ping!'
You are not your job ❤️
I’m really sorry that you’re experiencing this. Do you have a manager or HR or Talent Partner that could possibly advocate for you? During our pay cuts (which are ongoing) we’ve had constant check ins with our manager about making sure we are not overwhelmed and not working extra OT.
Hahah oh no! I work at Momentum Worldwide in NYC.
Oh crap I just posted a similar thing. I feel you sister.
It sounds like before it was easier to prove yourself. But now, who sees your sacrifice? So, it doesn’t seem worth it anymore because there are no opportunities for recognition, especially where pay is concerned. This is where you need to truly sit with your own expectations and have a conversation with yourself on what you will allow moving forward. Good luck!
I was in your position. Said I was overwhelmed and then told that the following week I’d feel some “relief.” The next week I was fired and the ECD was like “come on, you can’t say that you don’t feel relieved.”
What?!?! Omg I’m so sorry, that’s truly awful.
