Take $150k base. Every other number is based off that figure for your career. It's also not subject to whims of managers or markets. No brainer.

Not sure which level you are coming in at. But in this industry, don’t count on bonus. Take as much as possible in base

^well at some point, you will have to give them a number or negotiate a number. OP, it depends on how much risk you want to take. Base is the safest choice generally. I would approach it more from evaluating what criteria is is used to asses your performance and over what time, and your ability to influence that. For example, if sales is a key criteria, t would be tough to do in your first year since you have limited network at the new place and probably a non-compete, so I would want more base.

Never give a number. When they ask, say “I’m willing to consider any offer I’m presented with that meets the standards of this role I’m going out for)

like

Go for 150 base. If they dont like then say 149.5 as base and 500 VC. Confidently ignore any other BS about performance variable .

Thanks guys! It’s a strategy role at a private fund. The three areas are a. Performance b. Acting according to firm’s standards c. Did I achieve my yearly goals? Such as getting a CFA etc. Seems like more base is really the consensus. I will lean towards that! Thanks so much

Put 15-20% as VC. So 125 +25 or 130+20 is more rationale if 150 is the cap.

$150K and only 3 years out of college? What level and what state?

like

It on paper. They said they’ve budgeted ~150 k for the role and wants me to break down salary into base vs VC. But if I get a better than 3/5 performance rating, that VC could have a multiplier. So if I say 120k base and 30 k VC, I could end up with 160 k total.... idk what would be an ideal breakout. Please help!!

Just work from the base number, don’t try to factor in the bonus. If you want 150k, say 150k base and leave the bonus to them. They won’t put any kind of guaranteed bonus amount in the offer letter anyway (year-end bonus), so let their HR team deal with that at year end. What’s in the offer letter is the only thing anyone will care about in six months come bonus time (or whenever it is), so don’t let them confuse you with setting your bonus - it won’t hold anyway.

Why is it “seems like” . Its a clear option. May I ask how many years of experience you have?

3 years since college

I’m new what’s VC?

100% base 0% bonus
