Create a spreadsheet of everything you do. The easiest way to do this is to sit down and free form write without editing and thinking really if everything you do. Then organize it into the spreadsheet. In the next column identify who has the skills and who you trust enough to do the work. Create training instructions, check in points and delegate away. I have a spreadsheet that I created for a client that I’d be happy to share. Message me your email and I’d be happy to send it to you. It’s super quick and effective

Sometimes when I feel like this I write down a list of all the things that need to get done. Even this initial step can be super helpful. Then, I think critically about each item on the list. Am I the only person who can do this? Is there anyone to can take this on entirely? Is there anyone who can help, whether more junior or more senior? Then, I spend some time asking for that help in an organized and consolidated way. Maybe you’ll identify one person who can help with a few things so you can approach the conversation thoroughly. At the very least, you can have a conversation with your manager about prioritization using the list. “Hey - these are all the things I’m working on now and I cannot do them all. Which ones should I drop?” Hope that helps!

Writing down tasks / to-dos can help you organize but if you’re already at the point of burnout, it won’t help (speaking from experience). I learned to just speak up and ask for help! Pushing things off your plate to your team is gonna help you get above water. Speaker with your manager/coach about bringing in other people to help you. My biggest mistake was not speaking up soon and enough and getting burnt out.

Yes. Agreed. With the time off I have a lot is being delegated away and I’ll be mindful what I take back on in my return. It just seems that ever few years I end up buried and burnt out. I want to stop the cycle.

I do have a 2 week vacation off the grid starting May 29, but I need to get there and need to have a strategy to not fall into old habits when I return.

Adding to the good advice above, I think we tend to overestimate the number of tasks that can only be done by us. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “I’m doing it now, so of course I need to be the one doing it.” Delegating takes a little work, to identify the right people and make sure they have all the needed information, but in the end everyone will adjust.

Agree with all the recommendations here. In summary, synthesize what you own, note available documentation that you’ve created on how to do it and create a list of people who can back fill you or point people in the right direction.

Hello 🐠, I have been on a project that I do not like, has absolutely obliterated my work life balance, and put me under a lot of stress.
