You don't have to have a reason to resign from a position. You just put in your notice. Hope you're able to work through whatever issue you're experiencing, OP.

I would leave it just by saying “personal emergency”. It’s your prerogative to leave. You could do it by giving a vague reason. If you’re grilled on it, say its personal and family related.

When I was in my stub year as a first year, one of the rising second years went home for the holidays and simply didn’t come back at the new year. She’d decided BigLaw wasn’t for her and she wasn’t coming back. The partners might have judged, but most of the associates were just like, “Yep, I get that.” Last I heard, she’s working at a smaller firm in her home state and much happier. Thing is, she didn’t explain to the firm. She just gave notice and said she wasn’t going to come back. I only learned why she quit from another associate who was her friend. Walk away and be happy. You don’t owe an explanation.

The only benefit to being an at will employee is you can quit whenever you want for whatever reason.

Valid to you is simply valid to you, not them. You could just give them your notice and inform them you appreciated the opportunity to work with them. If they inquire why you are leaving, you could be as vague as you would like and let them know it is for personal reasons. It does not hurt to ask if you could switch offices. The worse they can say is no. If it is a yes, then you at least are still employed (huzzah)! Most employers understand that people will leave them whether it is for better work life balance, family, or a better work opportunity. Attempt to leave on good terms as best as possible. Stay proactive in your job search- I hope all works out well for you 😊

I just gave my notice without having something lined up. You don’t have to give a reason but IMO sometimes that could be worse/lead people to speculate/assume worse things. You can control the narrative if you give a reason (if you care about that). Im leaving bc of a combination of personal issues, the firm not being a good fit/being toxic, pandemic wfh isolation and resulting burnout. They asked, so I was pretty honest, to a degree. Everyone understood and even offered to help once I figured out what I wanted to do next. One partner even went so far as to observe that a lot of people are in this position now/reconsidering their paths!and he wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lot of movement in the coming years. So, tldr, I think giving a version of your reason is the best bet. If it’s really that stigmatizing, just make it up?

Sorry to hear this and I empathize with this problem.. it feels impossible to quit without giving a justification or having something lined up

Just leave, OP. Especially if you have enough $ to sustain yourself for a some time while you look for something else. I wish you all the best.

why not take a leave of absence or sabbatical ? most firms would allow this and it would give you time to line up next steps.

Hope you get through this! Can you take an extended leave so you have time to line up another job?

Can you work remotely so you can leave the city while looking for other jobs? And you can ask for help/accomodations for mental health reasons. I know an associate who took time off for mental health treatment and then went part time before eventually leaving and working full-time somewhere else.

When I quit my job, I wrote a formal letter to my employer: “I am resigning from my position with this firm. This is my two weeks notice, and my last day will be XYZ. It was a pleasure working for you, and I am grateful for everything I have learned here.”

Might be off topic, but guys please, take care of your health. I've been rejected by all companies in the last 2 months. I had my Walmart interview today and it went really well. And guess what? I got a rejection email. I felt dizziness while working and fell down today. I had to go to the doctor due to the anxiety and stress I was carrying since the last 2 months. It has affected my health. It's important to push yourself to achieve your goals, but don't forget to "Live" in the process.
