I think it's very sad that people have been made to believe working 80 hours a week is acceptable or sustainable.
Great question! I worked those hours for about 20 years. Was rewarded professionally as a result. Now, I’ve stepped back professionally and no longer allow my employer to dictate unfair work arrangements. I make less, have a lower job title, and politely refuse to take on extra so my employer can run the department on fewer headcount. I’m no longer the award-winning employee but I’m a lot happier with my choices.
That’s not sustainable at all and there’s no reason to attempt to get used to it. You should look for a job with another company. Work life balance is good for your mental health. Work should not be your entire life. Try to start looking for something before it takes a noticeable toll in your life
If you don’t mind me asking, what country and what industry is this?
U.S. and industry falls under finance.
So, are you working 11-12 hours 7 days a week to get 80 hours in a week.
No that’s not sustainable and as long as you do it they will accept it. Is that the norm throughout the organization or other people working those hours?
Thanks for the response. I try to have at least half a day Saturday and half a day Sunday off, occasionally I can have a Saturday off, so often I work from 8:00am to midnight with no lunch break. To be honest I’m not enjoying the role at all. Long work hours is a norm in the organization.
I could understand if it's temporary (ie they are in the process of hiring more people) but if not, these are crazy hours. I had to do it in my current role because the department was a hot mess and I couldn't lay my foundation and perform work tasks on a regular work schedule. But after a few months I could back off, and I always dictated my own schedule - no one was telling me to work that long/hard.
Really evaluate how much of it is the true job demand and how much of it is you accommodating the workload. If the workload is too much but you are managing it by working the constant hours, the organization won’t understand or see the need for additional resources. It’s 100% not sustainable to work at that level forever. At some point you will sacrifice your personal physical and mental health as well as any family life.
No that is not sustainable. You will eventually get very burned out. I would talk to your manager now and express concern.
No it’s not sustainable, and do not attempt to get used to it.
wow that doesn't sound normal and more like that company is taking advantage of you
Why are you feeling that way? There could be a lot of contributing factors. Just give it some time and then decide if it's still the same.
