I need some advice- how do I ask for a pay raise? I recently joined Deloitte (Toronto) as a consultant 5 months ago and I make 65k. Initially I thought this would be great but I’m struggling to keep up with my expenses (I live by myself, international student trying to support my little brother through school as well) I feel like I very recently joined & I haven’t done much notable work. I’m afraid to ask!

Using your personal budget is not a compelling way to ask for a raise. Can you apply to other firms and see if they offer more? Then you can establish the market rate for your position.

Really? I’m a grad in Toronto and that sounds about right in terms of comp

You said yourself you haven’t done much notable work. Other than personal reasons is there something else that you can leverage? In my experience salary coming out of UG is non negotiable and everyone in my class got paid the same

likesmart

Nothing I can think of that I can leverage & you are right, maybe I will wait until the end of the period. :)

I can confirm that that is the starting analyst pay in Toronto is $65, non-negotiable. Have a conversation with your career advisor about how to build up your case for promo

I’m starting as a consultant in Toronto at Deloitte and make less than that lol

You accepted the offer, so without major accomplishments, you probably won’t get more. Especially since college grads are at a standard amount for both A/C levels. I recommend either jumping to a new company or waiting until the next pay cycle for raises. Put yourself in the company’s shoes, why would they pay you more?

I would seriously consider getting a roommate when your current lease is up. If you’re only making 65K in Toronto, I’m assuming rent is eating up a lot of your take home pay right now

like

Yeah, I pay pretty much half my salary in rent. My last roommate bailed on me because she moved to Vancouver for a job & I ended up getting a place to myself.

Are you just out of undergrad? Do you know why they brought you in at C instead of BA? You can ask HR for the salary ranges for your level and one level above (just open a ticket) so you have as much information as possible Have mid year convos already happened? If so you may not have many options till the end of the performance year unless you get another offer. In the meantime, try to hustle for some exposure to some interesting work and ask for opportunities to contribute. Then bring it up with your coach. If they won’t entertain upping your salary at performance year end, start applying at other firms.
