I would go to my manager and lay everything out. It may be hard bc your company is the one who got bought it but lay out your responsibilities, your certification and a bachelors. Speak about how the market is progressively different for paralegals and you would like an increase. You have to have facts and lay it out though. You can just say bc you have a degree and more experience you deserve a raise. It’s unfortunate but it’s corporate

I would ask for much more than 20k if you’re the only one left.

I was the one on the flip side of that, we merged with a small firm and the incoming paralegals made more than the ones at the firm we merged with and when they found out, they were not happy. Ultimately, the firm didn't give them a pay raise, but hopefully it works out better for you!

Sorry to hear this! Do you have a managing partner you could address this with? Discuss your skills, how you make their practice better and profitable. Then ask for a salary adjustment to bring you up to current market value for paralegals. Search glass door and indeed for comparable paralegals rolls, make note of the once’s that list salary and use that if needed. Bonus points if you find a paralegal add for your office and higher salary range is listed. The job market for paralegals is super hot right now!

Has anyone ever gone on disability at a law firm where you’re the only paralegal to the partner of the firm? I’m worried I’ll be replaced while I’m out or that I’ll be letting him down. I’m already behind on my workload so I can imagine how backed up and out of touch I will be when I come back. I don’t want to let him down. I’ve been with the firm 5 years and I’m really his right hand. But I am concerned about it.
