I need some words of wisdom from this esteemed bowl. I have been an associate for almost 2 years in civil litigation with my bread and butter being family and marital law. I have the drive and desire to operate a solo practice with an emphasis on family law as that is my most comfortable area. I've been loved by all my clients and believe I have the charisma to attract new ones. It's not a matter of if I'll go solo but when. Any advice and/or potential pitfalls of going solo so soon?

Maybe add some humility. Being a solo means doing the books, updating your computer and cleaning the toilet while you build up your book of business. Good work and happy clients sell themselves, irrespective of your charisma

Do it- intelligently. Do not get a big office, new furniture, secretary, or a paralegal. Do your own work. Never let anyone else have signature power on your operating and trustee accounts; balance your accounts faithfully each month. Do your billing each month. I enjoy having space in a suite with other solo lawyers. The camaraderie is important... as are the business referrals.

Answer your own phones at first and have a plan of when to hire/get an office. Something specific. I set my goal based on client retention.

If associates at my firm are 150-200k range and junior partners at my firm are in the 250k range (mid law, less hours 1800, lower rates 250-650), how much do you think the 45 or so equity partners make a year? We have about 150 lawyers 80 ish million top line in revenue in 2021. I just want to know what the prize for sticking around here a decade to make equity would be. I am afraid to ask but I think I heard someone say 300k-1m dollars once a couple years ago. Thanks all!

Additional Posts in Small Law / Solos

Livid. Helped a friend with a small claims suit against a tow company that failed to provide them with all of the documentation/information as explicitly required by the vehicle code. And this violation explicitly allows statutory damages. Judge disregarded the law. Said that my friends weren’t really harmed by the tow company not giving that info. Disregarded statutory damages. Completely denied all claims. Insane. I’ve lost even more faith in our judicial system. Southern California by the way

I left my old firm and started my own firm in September. I have already started to get client referrals and so far I am working from my home only - because it’s COVID time and people know Zoom now. I do estate planning and elder law, which lends itself to meeting clients at their locations when needed. I had a client drop off documents I need to review at my house this week and this was fine with the client. Do any attorneys here open their own home to clients ever for meetings?

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?

I am 38 and recently relocated to Charlotte, NC. Been practicing for 2 years with my own firm in CA and was hoping to join a firm in the estate planning/real estate space to get more familiar with the marketplace out here. Seems like firms in that space want someone with much more experience (3-5 years) or are not hiring. When would it be time to throw in the towel and start my own practice out here? Was hoping to join a firm where I could make a community out here but prospects look bleak.

I am a first-year attorney in a 3 person firm (I’m the third). My bosses put me on the PD appointment list to ensure I have work but I absolutely dread court appearances and litigation.
