I need to revamp my intervention plan for foul language in the classroom. I can’t believe what these middle schoolers are saying and how little admin. does about it.

Perhaps you could write down quotes of what they’re saying and call home. You could also have classes compete against each other to see who can go the longest without cursing.

I had this prob so I made a swear jar with 10 tokens in it, and I told them we are having a donut party in two weeks. each time they swore I took a token out. If the jar is empty before party time.... no donuts.

like

I would have to have the token jar near me or locked up. The students might take the tokens or both just to be irritating.

Realize that they talk the way their parents talk. You can’t fix that. On the first offense, I take the student outside the classroom door and quietly tell them that the words they use are not acceptable in a school or business environment. After that correction, if it occurs again, I make a phone call home and schedule them for Saturday detention. It rarely happens again.

I agree and would love to hear some helpful responses

I had a swear jar in my middle school classes. All payments were called donations (you could donate money or lunch time to clean the classroom). All proceeds went to the “classroom fun fund” which paid for pizza for the best behaved class. I know, totally against edcode, but man did it work. Less profanity because students would check themselves and others to be eligible for the party. I didn’t collect very much cash and in the end I had to fund the party myself. But way less profanity was worth the cost.

Has anyone had the conversation on how we get Ss and Ts ready for returning in the fall? I’m not talking about mask usage, hand washing times, physical distancing in classrooms, etc. I don’t think we can expect Ts and Ss to come back and just hop right into academics. Need sometime to process together, get some SEL, be face to face social again, etc. Just wondering if districts out there have gotten a head start on this task.

We started state testing today with my kiddos taking their FSA Writing. It is the first time I have seen them in school as they are a digital class, and such an amazing experience to see them together as they talked amongst themselves before we went to the classroom to test. You can see how much they miss being together. ❤
