I never thought that I'd say this, but I want to see offices and cubes make a return to the workplace. Either that or 70-100% work from home. Only having the option of open workspaces is terrible.

I don't want to listen to your conference calls. I don't want to chat all day. I really would like to get my work done in the office so that I can relax when I'm off. Some hybrid of group workspaces, private offices, and 70% work from home is best in my opinion.

like

Especially as a creative, I find the open office space very inefficient. The company told me you were wfh as much as possible before I joined but I found out it was a friggin' lie... 😑

I recently switched to an independent agency that has just that, and it's so life giving.

Hey, are you my boss? I'd like to request 4 days a week WFH. Thanks in advance.

@huge 1 - Called XenoPsi, it's pretty great. About 75% of office works remote. The rule is, you can work from anywhere as long as you work standard EST biz hours and are available for video conferencing. Physical office has private and shared offices (3 people max), but no open bullpen space like most agencies. Another awesome factor - very little email communication internally. Most comms are handled through basecamp or IM. It's amazing.

I can't deal with the cafeteria style desks. I turned down an offer once because I knew I'd go nuts in their offices. My favorite set up was a quad. AD, CW, couple of designers, it was the best. We were pure fam. Once or twice a day we'd all turn and face each other, bullshit for 20 min then get back to work a little rejuvenated.

like

I would kill for regular work from home. There are so many distractions in an open office, and people constantly interrupting you and asking you things.

I've been WFH all weekend, and so far I've gotten nothing done. The only thing I've produced is heartburn due to the stress and loathing. I'll take an office any day.

From what I'm gathering.... We all want... Options?!

Saw a place with three sided offices - a desk on one wall, a window, a wall to pin stuff up on and an open bit that went into a central space with couches etc for meeting s. Perfect compromise imo

Open work space is a terrible idea but then it's based on saving $$$ and has nothing to do with"collaboration" and "culture". Most everyone HATES it. Only way to deal is to have options and flexibility based on your own workload and work style. So how about giving people OPTIONS and FLEXIBILITY.

Oh, and we have couches too :)

I'm hoping the epidemiology numbers kill this trend. Our office goes through waves of sickness, with people sometimes getting the same bug twice. Freaking Petri dish and Purell feels like a fart in a dust storm.

like

It's 2017 why are agency leaders stuck in this 1970's way of doing business and not allowing employees to work from home occasionally?? 😡

like

Flip side: WFH can kill an agency culture. If you aren't face-to-face, how do build rapport with your colleagues? How can you really, effectively collaborate? Don't get me wrong, I HATE our open office set-up, but our old "pretty much anyone gets an office" set-up sucked too. Everyone retreated to their closed up space, and no one talked to each other. WFH seems like it would cause the same problems...

like

did someone mention agency culture? we used to have that. the sterile remodel to open office snuffed out the lingering traces...

like

How about a hybrid? Cubes, open space for collaboration on projects, and offices reserved through calendars (Outlook) for a maximum of 5 hours a week.

Anyone else tired of the assumption that because you’re a partner you have to think a certain way and believe certain things. I’m talking about wokeness, work from home, and the recent ever constant pushing of the needle to the left or risk getting “cancelled”. I’m fairly liberal politically so for me to be saying this I think may say something for the current climate. I should be able to hold and express my own opinions without being quashed because I’m not “woke” enough.

I recently met someone in another country where I’m working remote. He asked me to be his girlfriend but I’m moving in about a month. He doesn’t want to do distance unless I move back (which is an option with remote work, but visas are tricky). I really like him but don’t know if I’d be able to move back here between work/borders/etc. Do I keep seeing him and just try to enjoy the now? A part of me just feels so sad about leaving and breaking up. Idk if it’s worth it.

I'm so thankful that EY has not made the Covid19 Vaccination a condition of employment and they allow work from home to remain an option. Such a great employer. I don't want the government or my employer to dictate what happens to my body, we must always have freedom of choice. That is one of the things that makes US a wonderful place to live. To all who received the vaccine I'm happy you had that option. I will wait a few years until there is enough vaccine data before I put it in my body.
