I often work with startups and starting companies so I was wondering Is it ethical for a NY lawyer perform legal work and get paid in equity instead of $$ ?

A cousin of mine does commercial real estate deals and tells me that many of their attorneys get paid in equity because their companies are not very solvent. Sounds like a great deal to me. I was wondering the same thing as OP so I am following this.

Thank you for the response

I have heard of such things, but I have also heard of insider trading actions for such counsel who becomes privvy to clients getting looked at by securities regulators for one reason or another and then dumping stock. So I would be aware of that aspect of your holdings and the insider position you possess, and be wary of your trading on any material nonpublic information you should become aware of in the course of your business as counsel to this client who is paying you in equity.

2017 grad so technically a 4th year. Lateraled to a CRE boutique in NYC that’s a major player. Learned quickly that my experience/knowledge/organization is not up to par (was a COG in the machine at prior firm). Just had EOY review and, though positive sounding, they’re dropping me to a 3rd year to ensure I’m not billing as a 4th year and able to do the work to learn/get up to par. I feel pretty okay about it (market salary deduction notwithstanding), but want to make sure I’m not being naive.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

How do I get taken off a matter I really hate? I’ve been on it for a year and I absolutely hate the team. The culture is toxic and the partners are horrible bullies.
