I once worked for a small firm and brought in home roasted coffee I made with imported raw beans for the entire office to try. I made a large enough French press and let everyone know there was just enough for everyone to have a cup. The big boss empties the entire French press into his large mug, chugs it and then compliments me on the flavor before walking away leaving everyone else without any.

What are some of your “partner is an asshole” stories?

The founding partner at my second firm used to look through people’s lunches in the fridge and take things he wanted. His theory: “everything that comes in the doors belongs to me.”

A3, not sure if you are just being funny. His theory was more insidious: all of us working in this 200+ employee law firm owed our livelihoods, our homes, clothing, etc to him so of course the food we brought to the office was his to take. Like a feudal king and his vassals. The comp committee told me that he took what he wanted and then let the committee divide up the rest however they wanted. I should add he never took more than he was worth given his book but just that attitude tells you volumes. I learned a lot about firm management from his example - what not to do.

Partner told a top-performing student at my old firm (who is mixed) that people like her have the worst qualities from each ethnicity. It wasn’t directed at her specifically, it was a general comment on people who are like her. This was in a performance review. The student’s performance was actually very good, and the feedback was otherwise positive.

I was hosting a pretty high level (1 or 2 level below c suite) meeting with a European client and they asked me “oh isn’t today a bank holiday you guys are working today?”.

I hate working on commission. I am a naturally shy person and approaching guests in our store is intimidating enough, it's even worse when some of my more socially savvy coworkers notice me trying to strike up a conversation with someone and they come in and literally steal my client from me.

My performance review is coming up. My manager never asks me how I am doing. Our 1:1s are 90% about work & ongoing projects and 10% about his life. But I am planning to share some constructive feedback with him on his micromanagement style and him being very prescriptive with his direction. How could I best approach the conversation? Thanks!

Is it silly to want to feel valued by my Partner/Practice Leader?

He rewards me well rating/comp-wise, gives me a lot of latitude etc but OTOH I constantly get blown off for check-ins, multiple emails ignored, excluded from some conversations that might be relevant for me, etc.

Maybe it’s just normal Partner behavior and I should grow a thicker skin, but generally feel emotionally disconnected from him and that my portfolio of work is not integral, or is an afterthought, to the practice.

Any other junior in-house lawyers report to non-lawyers?? How do you deal with it? My boss has worked in law their entire career but is not a lawyer. I added a well recognized litigator in my area at a top firm on LinkedIn... reason being is that I’m a first year in litigation and hope to accomplish at least half the things he has in my career. So it’s interesting to see his takes on things when he engages on a post.

I’m tempted to send him a personal message, not for a job or anything, but honestly just to ask “how he did it” and what advice he might give.

Is there any harm in this? Don’t wanna be annoying.

Does your firm consider Asian Americans to be POC for purposes of partnership promotions, etc.? I have multiple times now been purposefully staffed with other POC (non-Asian) attorneys and have been told to staff juniors who are women. I don’t mind this, of course, but it honestly feels like they don’t consider me an “actual” minority and that it’s not enough. If there is, e.g., a black attorney and a partner on a team, this never comes up.

Getting really frustrated with my job. Im by far the busiest associate my year level, and there are 2 people in my group who literally have no work at all. I feel like I keep missing targets and the partners are disappointed in me, but it’s hard to motivate when I see others not doing anything. I know I should be grateful bc the partners think I’m better than the others (and job security) but I can’t seem to convince myself to care.

I ask questions, but feel like I’m being a nuisance if I ask too many. I guess I didn’t expect to be solely (cont. in comments)
