I once worked for a small firm and brought in home roasted coffee I made with imported raw beans for the entire office to try. I made a large enough French press and let everyone know there was just enough for everyone to have a cup. The big boss empties the entire French press into his large mug, chugs it and then compliments me on the flavor before walking away leaving everyone else without any.

What are some of your “partner is an asshole” stories?

The partner I work with most often is very demeaning towards me when I make a mistake. How do I deal with this?

I was hosting a pretty high level (1 or 2 level below c suite) meeting with a European client and they asked me “oh isn’t today a bank holiday you guys are working today?”.

And, while very obviously working I replied “well we aren’t a bank”. My manager was shocked for like 5 seconds and repeated what I said. Am I in trouble?

Got an email late last night from my partner asking where my comments were. The email was fine, but they replied all to everyone in the email. So annoyed, but also very glad I am giving notice tomorrow.

I hate working on commission. I am a naturally shy person and approaching guests in our store is intimidating enough, it's even worse when some of my more socially savvy coworkers notice me trying to strike up a conversation with someone and they come in and literally steal my client from me.

My performance review is coming up. My manager never asks me how I am doing. Our 1:1s are 90% about work & ongoing projects and 10% about his life. But I am planning to share some constructive feedback with him on his micromanagement style and him being very prescriptive with his direction. How could I best approach the conversation? Thanks!

Is it silly to want to feel valued by my Partner/Practice Leader?

He rewards me well rating/comp-wise, gives me a lot of latitude etc but OTOH I constantly get blown off for check-ins, multiple emails ignored, excluded from some conversations that might be relevant for me, etc.

Maybe it’s just normal Partner behavior and I should grow a thicker skin, but generally feel emotionally disconnected from him and that my portfolio of work is not integral, or is an afterthought, to the practice.

Does your firm consider Asian Americans to be POC for purposes of partnership promotions, etc.? I have multiple times now been purposefully staffed with other POC (non-Asian) attorneys and have been told to staff juniors who are women. I don’t mind this, of course, but it honestly feels like they don’t consider me an “actual” minority and that it’s not enough. If there is, e.g., a black attorney and a partner on a team, this never comes up.

Getting really frustrated with my job. Im by far the busiest associate my year level, and there are 2 people in my group who literally have no work at all. I feel like I keep missing targets and the partners are disappointed in me, but it’s hard to motivate when I see others not doing anything. I know I should be grateful bc the partners think I’m better than the others (and job security) but I can’t seem to convince myself to care.

I am an associate at a small firm and was licensed last fall. I clerked at this firm through law school, so I knew most of the partners before starting as an attorney full time, except some of the new ones we have acquired since. I am a young and a woman of color. I am an incoming associate at an established firm in a relatively small city (~80k population). I like the firm very much. I am, however, the only woman of color at my firm. I grew up on the nearby reservation. I have recently been vocal about a local business changing its name. The name venerates an individual who massacred native people. It made the news. Am I ruffling too many feathers? Should I be less vocal now that I will be a lawyer? I feel uncomfortable
