Freelance Motion Designer here with 10+ years of experience. Explainer videos are my specialty, but I also do digital marketing content like social ads, animated logos, etc. I want to take my freelance work to a full-time motion designer position.

Any other motion designers out there that have had success taking their career to the next level? What did it take? Should I learn more skills? Perhaps market myself more?
Outsource the work
Take it as a learning experience. We all make mistakes, we all had that moment, but owning your own mistakes is the best self-development experience.
Break it down into smaller tasks. Can you get them something like a homepage and one interior to look at while you complete the rest?
While outsourcing is a great suggestion it’s also incredibly hard to find talent that you can rely on to get the job done and do it right especially when you’re already past due. Not to mention having to bring them up to speed on the project which takes time too. Basically what I’m getting at is… doesn’t sound like you have the time right now to do that so…
I would be honest with your client(s) about what happened and then give them a small break off their balance or invoice as an apology. Then create a new timeline that’s fair to them and make sure you can ship your deliverables accordingly.
Own the mistake and resettle the deadlines. Break them down into smaller ones. Redo your planning in a more realistic vision. More importantly, just accept it's not doable, face it like an adult and identify an actually realistic commitment you can explain in detail to the client in a very reassuring way. Don't go ahead with the nonsense of it's to end up in stress crisis and meds.
Ps: forgot to mention : we've all been there. This has to happen to know our limits and even then you will probably redo this mistake if you're an overachiever. Maybe each time the gap between your goal and reality will get smaller. This is ok and normal.
Thank you so much. I needed to hear this🙏🙏
Fiverr or upwork could definitely help! What exactly are you looking to get done? Maybe some of us can offer outsourcers we have worked with in the past or maybe someone on here can help out!
Agree with this feedback! And also, your guilt is probably causing anxiety where as the clients frustration is coming from lack of delivery or expectation. As scary as it may be, communicating a version of your explanation that offers some more visibility into where things are at and when things will be expected from here on out may calm their nerves a bit. Sometimes just being honest and coming with a solution to the problem can mitigate the tension rn. We are not heart surgeons saving the world with our work, so while deadlines are important it’s not life or death. Just take a breath, collect yourself and come up with a plan to share with your client going forward. You got this!
Outsource but most importantly be honest with the client. You either will earn their loyalty or lose them either way. Most likely if they find out through any manner than telling them you will lose them as a client.
When we were late w CLIENT WORK we delivered what we had and staggered the work.
