They want to understand and potentially go back to the client for additional Billings. There are a lot of factors; I wouldn’t worry about getting fired, but I would have an honest discussion on why. The previous team members that worked on the job could have eaten hours. I wouldn’t be concerned.
Thank you for your input. Maybe that is why they are asking. I have heard discussion around the office about making sure we are calling out time that could be considered out of scope of an audit.
I have the same fear ... getting coached out or fired 🤢
Interesting… thank you very much for your input!
If you’re still completing the work on time and it’s quality work then you have nothing to worry about honestly. Firms can’t afford to just get rid of good workers. But like someone else said, they might just be looking to extra bill. I also know that I usually make something out of nothing and when I’ve had a bad day or something took a bit longer, and I immediately go to the worst possible outcome of losing my job 😂 I wouldn’t put too much thought into it.
Maybe ask your senior manager for advice on how to work more efficiently if you have a good relationship? I would just explain what you said in your original post and mention that you take more time to produce quality work.
Thank you for your input! I will admit, I do have a bad habit of assuming the worst. I try not to but I do struggle with not assuming the worst.
Have you been getting good feedback (informal, or via formal performance reviews) from your team? If so, I wouldn’t worry that you are randomly going to get fired! Also you could potentially be too hard on yourself - if you do quality workpapers that don’t require re-work, I’d happily take that even if it takes you a little extra time. If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels though, think about why, and maybe your senior manager can help coach you.
Thank you for your input greatly appreciated!
Well I learned my lesson very well when I tried to be fast but suffered a lot of quality. You’re good to go. Don’t worry about it.
I feel teams are always not budgeting correct. They’re looking for us to eat hours.
Yeah I think this is a big part of the problem. I’m on one engagement where the partner this year was like “I think we can cut 20% of the hours this year” and without getting into detail that was just not feasible at all. The manager tried to fight her on it but she insisted and guess what happened??? We went over budget!!!
I would first think about why you are a slower worker. Is it because you are double checking triple checking your work? Or is it because you are taking more time to understand the tasks at hand? Budget wise- I would analyze the above first and if it is the case that the tasks need more time than budgeted due to the complexity then you can take it up with your team so that way can adjust the budget appropriately.
If you want to pace yourself, it may be better to move to a bank.
