Also one time I was carrying two bags of groceries a mile and a half on a hot day (bus fail). One of those dudes was like, “you dropped something miss.” I put down my heavy bags to check what it was, and he’s like “Your smile.”

Don’t worry ladies, he’ll never make THAT mistake again.
Get this- those people are actually employees of a 3rd party service that burns though people at a high rate. They are not directly employed by the non-profit.
I do not donate to orgs that hire those people to harass me on the street. Those people aren’t getting benefits and that is a hard thankless job. I’d rather donate to wage equality orgs that don’t solicit.
I've fantasized about tazing them.
They're basically taking advantage of social customs that dictate it's rude to ignore someone who is talking to you in person, then guilting you about a charity. It's a shame because I like a lot of the charities they do this for but I hate the tactic.
How can our industry help this? Can channels like instagram create pro-bono promotions for good causes to help raise awareness? (2/3)
I haaaate them. Same guy,, same corner, new charity each week. I tell them I already give yearly and they tell me it’s better if I give monthly. No. Just no.
Human equivalent of pop up ads. I don’t like their method. Interrupting people while they walk to ask for money is rude.
I’ve signed up for recurring donations at both Planned Parenthood and the ACLU from those people. I wait until I see someone nice and not aggressive and it totally makes their day. Their hearts are in the right place and it’s tough to stand out there all day. Might as well give them the credit for something I would have done anyway
Yeah, this is a super frustrating way to market charities. I had a guy chase me down to tell me I don’t respect women because I didn’t listen to his planned parenthood spiel. I am a woman. I support PP What’s the ROI on that? Anyone know? It must work or they wouldn’t do it???
There are enough marks out there who are easily guilted into donating on the spot. Social can’t do that.
As someone else mentioned, they’re hired by a third party company and their only goal is to make money so they get commissions. I get it, people need jobs, but it’s always felt shitty to me, praying on peoples good sides to get a commission. I also knew someone who worked for one of these companies and he was a slimey piece of shit who would boast about how much he was making
I was 7 months pregnant in sweltering August in NYC fighting crazy sciatica (resulting in a very noticeable limp). And I would get stopped by at least 3 of these people every day when I ventured out 1 block for lunch. Like - really?
There’s nothing more powerful then discovering a good cause on your own terms, versus neglecting them because their sidewalk spokespeople force you to speak with them on the sidewalk when you’re late for a meeting. (3/3)
