I planned to travel internationally in December. It’s for a family matter that is personal. I am worried a bit about Corona risk. Now I see a potential VACCINE is available, maybe. Do you think I will be able to get it before I leave? How would I do it? Pfizer said they’d have 50M doses made in 2020.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve had to travel internationally the last month for personal reasons, across 4 countries and just take every precaution I can. Mask, face shield, hand sanitiser, and sanitising wipes. Had periodic tests (4 to date) and so far so good.

Traveling is probably safer now without vaccine while everyone is being mindful and staying at home. Then with vaccine available but struggling to get one for yourself and increasing number of people out and about.

Recent IconRecent

Definitely not; medical staff and other front line staff would be first in line

like

@ OP, not before December

No, unless your a nurse, teacher, medical worker, etc. Working from home for McKinsey probably won’t qualify you...

likefunny

There are 6B people in the world and 50M doses.. what do you think?

like

I can get you some of that vaccine. Just Venmo $5,000 to @FourSeasonsTotalLandscaping.

likefunny

Sure, international travel for personal reason will put you right on top of the list of people to get vaccines first - doctors, nurses, law enforcement, teachers, and those at high risk.

You work at McK, Your Highness. You will be delivered vaccine first.

like

That seems unfair! It should go to Deloitte first given your more stringent acceptance criteria! ;) More asking about when wave 2/3/4 happens

like

Not likely. You’re just going to have to deal with it like everyone else

like

Unlikely — i would say rollout to low/medium risk public (non healthcare workers / essential workers) might start 2Q 2021. Also anticipate moderna and az to have similar results come out in the next few days.

like

McK, while I understand your eagerness, the nature of this question is that there is no real timeline yet apart from the initial 25M doses being available by EOY contingent on approval (atleast 2-3 weeks away based on the 2 month safety signal requirement) After that its really up in the air — no company/government is looking to put a concrete timeline since they will then be held accountable to that. Some factors to consider: (1) Different states have different guidelines for distribution— it is possible that major cities get one earlier than rural areas. Some states (CA, NY) are pushing for independent review following EUA that might cause delays (2) Additional vaccines might be available from Moderna and AZ — because if 1 vaccine works, it means that others are likely to work as well. This might accelerate the timeline but also cause delays due to different supply chain requirements and people selecting one over the other. (3) Even if you get the pfizer vaccine, it is a 28 day schedule to get protection with 2 weeks between each dose so that would put you into 2021. If you need to travel in December, your best bet is to wear a mask and go — it is possible to get a vaccine before then but unlikely. 2Q 2021 is a realistic timeline for phased return to normal according to fauci. 1Q if adoption is really good and distribution works like clockwork. Germany is hoping to do end of year but let’s be real, thats Germany (apart from the fact that their population is 1/6 of USA) You could potentially enrol in a trial because some of the vaccines will be allocated to those who participated in the trial and received the placebo.

like

And to add... it’s great Pfizer is seeing these results but logistically, the vaccine will be very hard to get out to the masses since it needs to be stored at such a cold temperature.

like

Yes, but do we have enough capacity of refrigerated shipping and storage to support the demand for the vaccine.

There are a bunch of articles and videos on the logistics of COVID vaccine distribution and possible ranges of timing for different groups. They all seem to point to no sooner than end of 2021 for healthy, low risk, non-medical staff. Should be a quick google search.

like

Most likely not because the first batch will be reserved for people at risks (first responders, elders, ...)

like

Yeah. Sorry I should have been more specific — when do we get to second batch then?

Sign up for the clinical trial

If the vaccine works, you will be slightly ahead in line to get the real one.

like

Are you sure the country you're traveling to doesn't have a travel restriction for people living in the US? That would be my main concern.

like

My wife is an MD and was part of the clinical trial so she’s done. I think this will be made widely available pretty quickly in 2021 and once you have your second dose you’re good to go!

like

They don’t know how long it confers immunity though, right? Would be curious to get her take. Please thank her for her work as well - I feel for all first responders.

Also 50 M doses is ONLY 25 M people (2 doses per person). No way you can get in that priority line (or any other line at least before May/June 2021)

I think they said 100M doses which is equal to 50M vaccinated

Lol if trump & pence are responsible for distribution, you’re not getting it by December

They’re going to check your address and voting history first.

like

You will not be able to get a vaccination before 2021. You will be traveling at your own risk. U.S. planes all have medical-grade filters installed now. Get tested before and after your flight. Wear a mask on the flight. You'll have a pretty low risk overall.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to get the vaccine until it has been tested for awhile. I’ll stand back in line while other eager people test it out!

Nope
