I would ask if they can match your current 14 weeks; it’s a middle ground between 12 and 16 anyway! Worst they can say is no.
(BTW I’m so happy family leaves are better than they used to be! I had six weeks of “short term disability” and used a week of vacation with my baby. Was back at work at the start of week 8. So glad companies are wising up a bit on this.)
(Continued…)
I asked for clarification and after a few days was told that it is only 12 weeks, they had misspoken.
I do believe that it was just a careless mistake and not a bait & switch, but I am frustrated since the strong policy was a factor in taking this job vs. holding out for another higher paying one I was in final interviews for.
Should I try to negotiate on the leave? If so, should I try to hold them to the 16 weeks paid they had indicated? Compromise with 14 (which is what I get at the job I’m leaving)? Ask for the extra four weeks but unpaid? Just get over it and accept the 12? I should note that the company is small and FMLA doesn’t apply.
This would all be negotiating for a hypothetical benefit that I may never need, it just seems to me that if there’s a time to negotiate it’s now when I’m being hired and not later on when I’m pregnant (especially given HR’s mistake).
An update/new question: I asked the HR consultant if the company would be willing to compromise and honor 14 weeks paid and an additional two unpaid (thinking that would be a good starting point for negotiating). They responded that they (the consultant) can’t authorize it, and then went on to point the vacation time/holidays that are offered. I would like them to take it forward to actual HR and/or the hiring manager for consideration, but I’m not sure how hard I should push them to do that? I don’t want to be seen as difficult before I even start, but it’s also a benefit that was a factor in my accepting the job. I kind of feel like they aren’t wanting to pass it on because it means owning their mistake, but maybe I’m reading too much into it.
