I’ve had the CSR for ~ 4 years (whenever they had the last 100k sign up bonus). IMHO, the Reserve is still worth it despite the higher annual fee. You’d be surprised at just what constitutes “travel” for the travel credit. You will easily hit the $300 credit, and faster than you think. The DoorDash credits and Lyft Pink membership (15% off every ride) also make it worth it.
The net-net cost for this card for me becomes somewhere in the $100-$150 range. Still more than the Preferred but the better earning power makes up the difference (for me at least).
Even with limited travel last year and this year the CSR costs me less than $100. The $300 credit has you down to $150 already. I use Doordash once a week and the discount there is $2-4 per order, Lyft Pink comes in handy here and there (although not that much because I don’t use rideshares often), and I always pop in to a Priority Pass lounge when there is one. If it’s a situation where I would have otherwise grabbed a bite to eat or coffee before boarding, I come out ahead financially even if the lounge itself is mediocre.
Preferred now and upgrading to reserve later makes more sense. ESP if you do eventually travel for work, then upgrade asap
You can upgrade, it's not a separate card.
I upgraded mine a year in, and the upgrade process is really simple, if you’re concerned about that. But they will do a credit check, so that’s one thing to note.
I would do preferred now. Came really close to going back down, but I decided to stick with reserve for another year. If we’re not regularly traveling again by next year, I’ll move down to the preferred.
Why not get both? You can double dip but you have to do so carefully.
Apply for CSR or CSP, and get approved.
Apply for second card next day. Second card HAS to get approved this day for the application to not auto reject. This means you may have to call recon and push your application through.
If you don't do this method, you'll only receive the signup offer on one card and you'll be locked out of getting another Sapphire bonus for 4 years.
Agreed with people on here saying get both - that way you can put on the CSR what will get you 3x (even if it’s just groceries since you’re not traveling) and put everything else on the preferred for 1.5x. If you really want to build a nest egg of points it’s worth the annual fee
If you don’t want to do both though I’d still consider the CSR solely because of the 3x for groceries
