I put in my two weeks at my current firm but the manager is asking me to extend by one week to cover for someone that is going out on PTO during my last week - should I stay for an extra week or dip?

If they were laying you off and you asked for an additional week to get your affairs in order, would they give it to you?

You got me there🧍‍♂️ in all honesty, they probably wouldn’t :/

Lolno. Take that mental break, you need it to refresh for your next job

Stay in the eventuality that paths might cross in the future. One week is short.

I just see this as an opportunity. Someone just called in a favor (please stay longer), it’s not a “do ut des” but normally when a favor is granted people feel they “owe” something back. So when I say “paths crossing again” I mean it broadly - Including for example the ability to ask to be a reference for future jobs/positions. If you believe you: -are not likely to either work with/for them in the future -did not impressed them enough with your work to ask them to be references -can’t stay the extra week with a positive attitude Then, sure, move onwards but if not...it’s 5 days! On a separate note, I usually try to have my last day to be on the first days of the month so that insurance premium is already paid for the month and I can wait until the next month to start the new job and have 3-4 weeks in between.

likefunny

Maybe just say you can only stay an extra two days. This will show that you care about the relationship while still caring about yourself more :).

Hopefully they can give you the most important work they need in those two days and everyone wins!

I would just stay the extra week. Unless, of course, you have a trip to Mykonos or Ibiza planned. Then all bets are off.

I just had the same exact situation and decided to stay the week. You never know when paths may cross again. People tend to remember things. I only had one week in between jobs, but it’s fine.

Add the sour cream.

You have no obligation to stay an extra week but if you can do it - you will build good will when your paths cross again. World is small - acts of kindness will be remembered.

Well in that case I would say leave

I'd probably agree to it, but that is some cheek of your manager to ask that of you.

Use the extra week as leverage

If you can extend by a week without impacting any personal plans or your new role, It always reflects positive if you can extend or even give 3 weeks notice depending on your role / level. I have typically offered to give 3 weeks but I have give 2 weeks knowing much transition wasn’t required. My prior role had to walk me out once I gave my notice due to my level and going to a competitor.

If you don’t have ANYTHING planned and don’t MIND the extra week then just do it! It’s the business world. It revolves around favors and IOUs. Yes, I understand that you might not ever cross paths or even speak to them again, but what if you do? One week I’d say is worth it. Have a relative or close friend that might want the job? Your old team can help with that as well. However, don’t rearrange plans if you already have them.
