My opinion, a toxic boss isn’t toxic because they do what needs to be done and address what needs to be addressed. The fact you’re concerned about being perceived as toxic is a huge factor in telling me that you are not. Best of luck on Monday! You’re already ahead of the game on this one.
By this response- you’re definitely not a toxic boss. Showing empathy and willing to assist with the process of her understanding is a great step. I hope she sees your intentions and really takes the time to learn from you to be better. And recognizing the need for having clear set of expectations and guidelines for doing the job is even better!
Has this employee gotten a warning or has this employee been approached with about these concerns prior to the write up? If so, what were discussed and how did the employee respond? What was the disconnect with her believing she is competent but actually not? When you redo all of her work, do you explain to her why it needs to be redone?
Sure! The temptation is high to do the work yourself since you know what needs to be done. The challenge of being a good manager is also being a good leader in being able to communicate what needs to be done and how.
Right off the bat, first impression without knowing you… I’m going to say that the fact you are concerned about being perceived as toxic, tells me you likely are NOT. That tells me you have empathy and the two (toxicity and empathy) don’t typically coexist!
And I didn’t even read above to see someone else basically said the same thing!
I don’t believe that you are. Now you’re not my boss so I couldn’t say for certain. But like my boss is extremely toxic. She put a bunch of shifts of my schedule without telling me. When I tried to see if we could do something about that because it was not humanly possible she told me that it’s mandatory and if I don’t attend I will be written up. I had even told her about the week before almost driving my car off the road because I got 8 hours of sleep in like 4 days because I was worked so much. And she told me that doesn’t concern her and then threatened me with a write up again. One of the days I was already scheduled a double (2p-6a) and she scheduled me for a meeting at 9a. And I had to be back to work another double the next day.. at 2p. That is toxic, not writing someone up for not doing their job properly.
Oh my goodness. I hope you can report your manager to compliance.
