Not going to happen. The hours model is in place for revenue recognition. They can't recognize revenue based on productivity...

In my sub-service line that goal takes on average 2-5 years, with milestones that aren’t always foreseeable in advance. Indeed the goal may change as the engagement progresses. I bill on a time and materials basis and while I (and the client) don’t want my team to be inefficient, price of the service is generally not the client’s top priority and may very well be low down on their list.

How else do you want to measure productivity? We have utilization for hours and sales goals for sales. What else is there?

like

We do by recognizing that person as high performer and paying them more. But they are still expected to meet the utilization goal. To spend the 4 hrs they saved on something else productive.

Utilization as a metric is antiquated and for dinosaurs.

like

Utilization is your measure of productivity, because you are being paid for hours you work by the firm.

How so? Especially considering we’re paid salary.

There is a realization component that is measured too. I.e. is your time being billed fully vs written off.

Ahh realization, the KPI for manager performance

For client engagements, Staff gross margin is a better measurement than realization. It is net fee revenue (cash or fee paid) minus salary and benefit cost.
