100% true. Not just about diversity but about casting a wide net to get the best talent generally. Our hiring needs have skyrocketed the last couple years and this is one way to accommodate our needs.
@OP you are an experienced hire though so this is a totally separate process. Your best bet is through a referral.

I've heard a more specific form that MBB was increasing hiring among full time MBA programs in the rank 10-20 space, broadening the previous focus on top 10 programs. Think of it more like semi-target versus straight up non-target. Think Duke or Cornell vs Harvard and MIT. If you're talking about a random state school (which isn't CA, MI or VA flagship) you're probably still going to be out of luck.
Yes. A part of this is what other commenters mentioned about getting non-target cream of the crop performers. The other aspect, however, is that recruiting from targets is getting harder with the relentless pressure from tech for competing for talent.
TLDR you get a better return on talent with broadening your hiring pool than you do with dropping even more exorbitant amounts of money on the same small applicant pool.
