I listen to various podcasts about the Supreme Court and these are the possibilities Uphold Dobbs, shrinking what is an “undue burden”. This would probably mean it was 6-3 and Roberts writes the majority opinion. Uphold and Strike down Roe/Cassey This would be 5-4 and is VERY possible based on the arguments so far.

like

Yup - even if not overturned Roe and Casey will be dramatically curtailed. We will see what happens but none of the other 5 conservatives seemed particularly interested in Roberts’ approach. Either way it is effectively the end of Roe - the 6-3 route just takes a few more years and cases in front of the Supreme Court until a Texas style rule is not considered an “undue burden”

This topic reminds me of something I learned while studying International Relations: if the UN didn’t exist, then we’d have to create something like it. Definitely apples to oranges but principle still applies: if we didn’t have a law that governs/regulates abortion, then we’d have to create it. The conservatives on the court will be short-sided if they overturn Roe v Wade, and they will predictably face a series of new lawsuits that will force them to reinstate another legal framework.

I think RBG wasn’t fond of the Roe v. Wade decision for this reason. It took the wind out of the sails of the women’s rights movement that was lobbying to address the issue via legislative action.

There is a 100 percent chance the law is effectively gone by June. The evangelical conservative moment has worked for three decades to engineer this result. I don’t understand how people can be this naive.

They have absolutely been patiently waiting and positioning to get justices on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe. Trump is irrelevant. He was just the vehicle that ended up successfully obtaining that long term goal.

And Susan Collins has a special room waiting for her in hell for her absolutely intentional head-in-the-sand obtuseness that allowed her to sleep at night after voting to confirm Kavanaugh. Same for Lisa Murkowski, who I normally respect a great deal, for voting for ACB.

I had to re-read the first sentence a few times, feeling like there was a missing "doesn't" in "I really don’t think there’s a chance that the SCOTUS overturns Roe". It's absurd you'd blame this on the media. Trump was crystal clear in his reasoning for appointing who he appointed (that they’d automatically overturn Roe). The people he appointed have been clear in their words and actions over the years. Kavanaugh was crystal clear in the the one abortion case that ever came in front of him, as he rushed to defend a terrible Trump admin policy, which is probably why Trump nominated him. Thankfully Kavanaugh was overruled by the full appeals court. Search “Kavanaugh Jane Doe” to learn more. The "non-partisan approach" is a charade. It's a farce. Of course they'll make it look like this. Why would they overtly display their intentions and leave zero doubt that the SCOTUS has become an illegitimate body? RvW is dead.

like

ACB is a full blown religious kook who is there solely to overturn Roe. Thomas, though, is trying to make sure the ban can never be overturned by arguing that a fetus is actually a person (which brings the 14th into play). The religious right has been planning for this for decades. The playbook is being deployed exactly as designed.

With social security potentially running out, why couldn’t it be an option for the govt to put $5k for every baby that is born in a year into an account Invested in a govt share class S&P 500 fund. Historical average is 10%+, which would provide roughly $2.7 million for a baby born today. Eventually, this would eliminate the need for soc sec tax, and would only cost $18 Billion a year instead of several trillion a year being deposited into the trust.
