I really want to do an MBA, but recently lost a family member, and now have an elderly dependent to take care of. All my target schools will require me to move country. I have 3-4 YoE - probably too little for an EMBA, and not keen on any of the digital programs given they are not of the same standing. Anybody managed to do an MBA with dependents and have recommendations on how to get around this situation?

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I admire you for caring for your elderly dependent. Would you be opposed to holding off for a year to gain your footing? Is there any other family around to help you with the care? One more year of experience can only benefit you, imo. And perhaps this experience could make for compelling essay material. I am curious to see what everyone else thinks

Thank you for such an empathetic response! Yes I’m looking at Aug 2022 cycle or later (but conscious application deadlines are much earlier). I think I’ll have to take care of him regardless of MBA timeline though - but trying to get him a visa/ place near campus etc seems like a daunting task

Deepest regrets for your loss. This is probably above fishbowl's pay grade, but there may be options to make this work for your family and yourself. My one piece of advice is that if you are at the 3-4 yoe mark, there isn't a ticking clock here. That is not to say that another year or two will necessarily lead to a better situation for you and your family, but it does mean you have some space to figure out everyone's needs and priorities.

You’re the perfect demographic for an online or part time MBA. It’s actually the other way around for your prestige concern. You can do an online or part time MBA at one of the schools that do a full time as well. Online/part time students benefit from the assumption that they went to the physical location/full time (you don’t need to specify on your resume as you get the same degree). It’s the non-online/full time students from the same school who get a knockdown in prestige because companies can’t tell them apart from the online/part time folks.
