I recently (1+ yr ago) transitioned from consulting to industry. The hours are much better. Total comp is less than what I was making on the consulting side (-15% less). My schedule is much better, and I have a good routine outside of work. However, I don't feel accomplished at my current role and feel like I am not learning as much. I was hoping that I would make up for that comp difference in a year or two but upward mobility seems limited. Is it too soon to look for another job?

In a very similar boat, moved to industry (<a year ago) for a similar pay cut but 50% reduction in hours. Also bored and want to go back to higher comp lol, casually looking at roles now but for me at this moment, the WLB is a huge factor, so it's hard to leave.

I don't think I'd go back to consulting at this point or a startup, but I would target a FAANG type role which would certainly be more lucrative than my f500 industry role

Former consultant turned industry person here - Have you considered working for a healthcare system such as hospital system / senior living? I think most would find it rewarding so long as you find a home at a passionate patient-centric org.

like

Yeah just trying to find a good balance. Want to do continue learning but also not do the 50+ hrs of just doing slides.

Good to know I'm not the only one in this boat. How do you go about knowing that you can make much more in consulting / startup? Just feel like I can make more and more importantly, learn more.

Where did you both move? Just asking to know what’s the option

Moved to a large health care system (>5 hospitals, >10 EDs, >10 Urgent Care facilities, >150 clinics/practices) working with strategy/ quality/ patient experience.

What type of role did you take to have a pay cut?

Provider pays less for thr most part. Payor can pay more

It's definitely two different worlds - consulting vs industry.

If I'm single/have no plans for marriage or start a family, then the grind in consulting is fine. However, once I enter my 30's/mid-30's and start thinking about marriage/kids, that's when my priorities will have to shift and I'd go back to industry.

The learning/career advancement/money will only take you so far. Always prioritize your personal life and adjust your professional life accordingly. Not saying you can't have the best of both worlds, but sometimes it's just easier and much less stressful to prioritize one aspect of your life over the other. I'm not passionate about healthcare (as a career) enough to prioritize it over my personal life. Just me though, YMMV.

I want to take more brainstorming, decision making responsibilities but I don’t see that in the career path for PM. Career path usually goes like this- Sr PM, Director l, Sr Director, and so on. But all do same work.
