Depends entirely on you, and your appetite for enduring the time it will take for progress/change—and there is no wrong answer. It will be part exhausting and part satisfying to witness and/or participate, and it may often be more the former than the latter. If the company’s recruiting efforts are successful, you may want help to build a coalition (eg an employee resource group) with the new hires to hold them accountable. On the other hand, no one is entitled to your sweat equity. But above all, guard your heart, your energy, and your sanity.

Run for hills. Sorry but if all they are doing is hiring and not addressing the systemic problems within their workplace and the inclusivity of the work environment, change is going to hard to come by. Diversity is the quantitative and visible change but if the behaviors aren’t changing (e.g:, working to change unconscious biases, disrupting micro aggressions, psychological safety, etc) you and every hire they made will leave sooner rather than later. It’s the qualitative aspect of the organization that matters as much as the diversity. Do POC have a voice? Do they feel like they belong? Are they being given a true opportunity to grow into and as leaders? It’s going to be very hard for leadership numbers to change because but if the org is not nurturing the POC talent they already have, this growth with be hard to maintain.

Is it possible to chat with people who are on those DEI committees or have a similar background to yours? As a POC myself that’s something I’m going to try and do moving forward with new jobs. While you e accepted the job, at least you’ll have an understanding on how much of that DEI has intent vs just being PRable. And that way you can also figure out for yourself if this is a place you have a long term future with. Some places are genuinely trying to do better and if I heard that from the POCs and DEI representatives I’d be more inclined to help them with that process too.

Low energy, nervous, dry mouth, reading off slides, hard to keep my mind in the bigger picture or focus on the story. Womp womp. Really getting me down and not sure how to get the magic back.
