Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

I feel like VP1 is being mindful and wants OP to be careful which is appreciated, though if there is some background there I would love to know. So, is it possible that new boss is snooping on old boss?? What is their issue and how much of a competitor is it? I'd love to know what companies these are.
Yes. And if OP is sharing info, he will be branded as a person who is untrustworthy. I wouldn’t hire someone like that.
Do not do this. This is a strict breach of your fiduciary duty and obligation to that company regardless of NDA. Rule of thumb, If it sounds wrong, it usually is wrong.
All of the above , Trust us on this one
For some additional context (while trying to stay vague): There are some internal tools/processes we've developed that are unique to my old company and I feel like that's what they're trying to get at
Can’t stress it enough, do not do it.
Agree with others. Share your concerns in an email to boss with HR cc’d. It’s one thing if they asked what tech stack you have experience with. They are going after proprietary info.
I do agree that it might be a test. They already tried to ask me who I've worked with in the past during my interview (it's a small, niche industry that I work in and everyone knows everyone) and I gave a vague response and they seemed annoyed. I wrote it off then but I should've seen it as a warning sign
When I was getting recruited, one of the things they sold me on was that everyone on the team was a long-staying member. What I didn't realize is that for most, this is their first foray in the industry and therefore they have no idea what's being done - I'm the only that's come from the "outside". I'm just worried that they only hired me to try to get at this institutional knowledge and they'll try to manage me out if I don't say anything. Damned if I do, damned if I don't kinda situation here :(
All of these people sound super odd. But if they said you'd come running back, while that's kind of aggressive, it does show that the second place might be the craziest one. Tough thing is if you can afford the loss in the meantime if you end up with neither, in which case do you go back again to leave again. I don't envy you
@VP1 Interested to know why you are so adamant about this. Did something similar happen to you?
Right? I would never want to work for a shady company.
The other reason why I'm freaking out is because I'm from another country and the new company is sponsoring my visa - so if I quit, I'd need to find someone else to sponsor my visa within like a month or two which is pretty difficult where I'm located
Go back to the other company
