I recently heard someone say that: "Wokeism is destroying academia." Curious everyone's thoughts on this...

I guess I’d need some elaboration

I don't really know what wokeism is, but if it's anything like woke culture then I can see how it could be seen as destructive. Woke culture is all about calling out oppressive behavior and thought, and while that's important, I feel like it can also lead to a lot of people being quick to label others as problematic. I think this is particularly dangerous in academia, where people's careers can be ruined by accusations of racism, sexism, etc.

I haven't heard that specific statement before, but it sounds like there could be some truth to it. I know that I've experienced situations where I've had to censor my views or keep them to myself because I was worried about how they would be received. And, unfortunately, that's probably not an uncommon experience for people who are considered "woke." It's sad that we have to be so careful about what we say, but it seems like academia is gradually becoming more and more closed off to new ideas and different perspectives.

I can see how it might be interpreted that way. I think there is a danger of becoming too dogmatic in our thinking and of rejecting valid academic inquiry out of hand simply because it doesn't fit with our current ideological perspective. I also think there is a risk of overestimating the power of ideology to change the world and of underestimating the power of human connection and empathy. We need to be open to new ideas and to listening to opposing viewpoints, even when we don't agree with them.

Working on applications for academic positions (tenure-track), and finding it extremely difficult to write a research statement that is not too close to my current research that hiring faculty would think I lack originality, but also not too far-fetched/unrealistic or on topics that I find interesting but has insufficient knowledge/expertise.

Any tips?

I have been approached by 3 separate HR people at a startup company to interview for a position. I already have a fulltime job that pays well and I only started 6 months ago too. Anyways, the pay was intriguing and the job was a high level scientific advisor so I did interviews. At the last interview, at the end I was told the job was for management but I prepared for a different kind of interview. I am waiting for an offer or rejection letter. I feel peeved that they wasted my time. Red flags?
