I recently interviewed for a great company and they are offer me a base + commission salary of which the base salary is much lower (15k less) than what I was making in previous role and is also below the industry rate. They say the commission will make up for my expectations. Now I am in a bit in bind because this is great company and will give me good exposure for future opportunities but I also want to negotiate the salary. How can I approach this?

I would try just being very up front about your expectations. Find out if commission is on a monthly, a quarterly or yearly basis. If monthly then you may still be in good shape but I would express your current salary is higher and you can’t afford to depend on commission that’s not guaranteed when you are used to making a set amount each month currently. If you really want the role and think the commission will be consistent and paid monthly then it could be worth the jump if it’s a great company like you are saying. Just don’t come across greedy but rather just genuinely express any concerns you have, and see what they can do.

Also I would say compare benefits with what you have now, a 6% 401k match vs say 3% is a big difference for building towards your future etc, benefits are huge so don’t solely look at salary.

You have to think what is important to you. I did the same mistake with my current company by taking a offer less than my past salary and HR convinced me to accept the offer showing 20% bonus. Since I joined the company, the company offered always less than 10% bonus and somehow my motivation to learn new technology and other stuff gone. So take wise decision.

Don’t fall for it. We go to work to get paid, nothing more, point. I do not care if it’s a “great” company. You should look out for yourself as if you don’t, no body else would.

Be very clear about your compensation goals, do your research and understand the average market rate, approach the recruiter in a professional manner presenting your requirements with a hint of your felxibility to negotiate. If they agree and you both get to a middle ground, good, if you don’t then it’s time to move on.

You do not pay your bills with “great”. And if they’re that great then they should compensate people fairly.

Don’t dwell on it too much anyways.

Should you always negotiate salary? I told an employer what my salary range was and they offered the top range in the first round of negotiations? My total comp would be an additional 25% on top of salary. I’m elated about the offer but I’m concerned they’ll have doubts about me moving into a contract negotiation role if I don’t negotiate. Is this a valid concern or am I over thinking it?

I feel like I was straight up lied to during the interview process. “lots of opportunities to hit quota”. I’m sitting here with only one demo two months after joining the company. it looks like our team has only two people doing demos, and demos are only happening once every two weeks. At this rate, I don’t think I’ll be even close to hitting OTE. Are there any other companies hiring right now? I’ll have a discussion about my concerns with my manager soon, but there’s too many red flags here.

Living in NZ/AUS - Worked for a local government before moving to a mid-tier PA with a 15% pay cut 5 months ago.
Former manager with whom I’m still in touch and maintained good relationship, contacted me for a higher position (Management Acc) with a 40%-50% to my current salary in PA.
I plan to move overseas in the future to be close to the family so unsure on how much Government experience will be valued compared to PA which will be valuable.
Would you leave PA for Govt with better pay?

What is the typical pay cut percentage when going from contract to full time? I know that contractors are typically paid a little more since they aren't eligible for benefits, but when being hired on at the end of the contract what does a reasonable salary look like?

Just got an offer from a company and they only gave me till Monday end of day to accept or decline. It’s a 36% raise to my current base salary and I would be at 90k now.

I was wondering if you guys know if it makes sense to ask for more time? Would asking for more time affect me negatively or?
