Wow! I’m sorry about that. I’m also sorry that I don’t have any suggestions for you. However, I’m wondering what the legalities are surrounding a multi-level building with no elevator What accommodations are made for students with mobility issues?

like

Great question! I am curious about this as well.

your school building is not handicap accessible? can you be accommodated on the first floor?

like

Moving classrooms is not an option.

Wow, no elevator, how old is your school. How do they accommodate those with handicaps? At our high school we have clubs and athletic teams that help teachers move in and rearrange and decorate during pre-planning. Do you have any former students who would help or colleagues?

Plan ahead so you make the fewest trips up and down as possible. Also, don’t feel badly about asking for help from your colleagues and students. You will need it

like

I had knee surgery and had to do four flights when the elevator broke. Something to make sure of is that the emergency committee know you can’t do stairs for fire drills

I went through this last November and was out for 3 months. Be very careful. Just because you will be off crutches by the first day doesn’t mean you will be back to pre-injury. It is going to take time. You will need help and support. I would advise you to talk with your principal and keep them updated on your progress. Your surgeon will write you a work release detailing what your activities can be at first. Hopefully your administration is as helpful as mine was. Good luck !

The point of my post is not to discuss the legalities of this situation. The point of my post is to look for advice to be able to affectlivley do my job while injured.

like

If you are on the third floor of a school with no elevator, then I think the legalities of such a situation are a legitimate concern. Under the ADA, schools must accommodate any individual who has a physical impairment. That is the basis of Section 504. I believe the reason it has been brought up so much is because we, the people to whom you are looking for advice, are baffled that you would not have these accommodations. If you want to dismiss the legalities, then the only advice would be to take the 3 flights of stairs very slowly, and possibly use an orthopedic boot as a signal or reminder to the students to be careful. Best of luck

I don't really have any advice, but our building is also 3 stories with no elevator. If we were to have someone with mobility issues we usually just move them to an open room on the first floor and their classes just rotate through that room.

Contact your colleagues. They may have helpful ideas. Contact your principal, too--immediately!! Give that person a chance to find you some help. If no help or even ideas are offered, involve your building union rep.

like

If you can, reach out for help. See if there is someone who can move with your kids through the hallway to help you limit your time on the stairs.

If any of your former students play high school sports, I’m sure their coaches could count some of the heavy lifting as part of their workout for the day! Good luck and get well soon!

Sounds like you need some help from teen boys to move some things! Or to carry your stuff in from the car, etc. I would think your principal would be accommodating and help with this? I would hope that you can get up and down the stairs with crutches, albeit slowly, but if it’s just on setup days, maybe you could manage to only do it once per day? Hopefully you’re recovered by the time school starts

This can’t be legal? What if a student broke their leg? What if a student uses a wheelchair?

What modifications can your union help you with?

Notice etiquete question. If you give your 2 weeks’ notice on a Monday, is your last day a Monday (2 weeks later) or can it be the previous Friday? Does your answer change depending on the time (morning/ afternoon) notice is given? If I don’t want to potentially burn any bridges, should I just have my notice period end on a Monday and just take that day out of my scheduled vacation before starting my next job? First time giving notice - would be interested in hearing what others have done.
