I recently lateraled (3rd hear) into a biglaw firm from a clerkship just before the start of the fiscal year (Oct. 1). I’ve been out on a few matters and have worked on some clients, but this will be the second month in a row I’ve billed under 150 hours/month. I’ve been told by partners and associates to enjoy the lull but I can’t help but feel like I’m not being productive. I also feel like if I ask the partner or seniors for more work again it will genuinely annoy them. What should I do?

Weird question- or confessional (unsure tbh)- do any of you ever play hooky? I billed all weekend (7 year atty in ID) and today is wicked weather in the south so I’m “wfh” but not really. A question for the associates:
How should I talk to a new associate on my team (4 mos.) about critical issues including 1) spending too much time on a single project; 2) not meeting expectations in terms of number of billable hours; 3) botching easy procedural issues? This person has significant skills and writes very well. But their work is consistently turned in at the last minute, they have to be corrected on procedures regularly, and they never come talk to me without an invitation.

Has anyone taken  ACAMS Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS)? Any comments/ reviews? How has it enhanced your employability? Why did you take the CGSS?

So I got a job offer for a firm making one third more than what I do now. BUT the glass door reviews are terrible (all negative one very recent) saying that the bosses use you and abuse you. Small firm but I want to pívot into practicing L&E (I currently do construction defect and insurance defense). Sooo Do I accept the offer and hope it’s not as bad as the reviews and if so, stick it out until I get enough experience to jump ship?

Not a lawyer specific question, but since many of us have crazy student loan debt thought I’d ask here. Why on earth isn’t there a conversation around the predatory interest rates on student loans? I feel like it would be so easy for the federal government to slash those rates, then people would actually pay back their loans, and it would be so much better for so many. We are instead having exclusively conversations about loan forgiveness but why no love for reduction in interest?
