I recently learned that a contracted associate (who I supervised, but I didn’t have visibility on their salary) earned 2x my salary over a 6 month contract, and at 30hrs/ week. First, is this normal? Second, how do I use this information to renegotiate my salary? (My employer of 5 years doesn’t know I learned about the contract details. )

Its very common.

They don't have job security, benefits etc. Hence they get paid for the work they come in for. If that work gets over then they are released with no garuntee what comes next.

Due to this risk, the pay is higher

like

Understood on the risk and lack of benefits, thanks. Wondering what the “value” of those things are- let’s say if base salary is $75k, is $150k normal to cover the risk/benefits?

This is tricky but if your role is higher and your tasks are of higher importance then you definitely can argue that your pay should be higher. Were they hired after you? If so you could maybe approach the topic with something along the lines of a compression issue, or not exactly the same but maybe internal equity issues.

Thanks for the explanation. This will be helpful in negotiations. Makes sense and it does sound like this is happening.

This is becoming the norm unfortunately. I would just ask to have a meeting with your manager and show them what market value is and what you should be paid.

like

Problem is they know what market value is they are the ones paying that person of a lower role higher than you. The problem is what to do after you bring it up and they say wait until your yearly review.

Do folks in tech reach higher levels of compensation than consultants 5 to 10 years post MBA? I still keep in touch with many of my classmates who made a beeline to work for FAANG firms post MBA, and their compensation absolutely dwarfs that of MBB and Big 4 by a fair amount and the gap only seems to widen with time. The wlb, by all accounts, seem to be much better too.

Would love to hear from anyone else who made a similar move or knows others who jumped to tech?

I've been working at a government agency for 6 months, helping to stand up a new team. The job involves interacting with real estate developers. One of the developers reached out to recruit me for a similar position that will pay more than $50k my current salary. I feel guilty, especially since I'd interact with my current team on the other side. It's a hard to turn down that salary, though I feel guilty since my team is thin, and it's only been 6 months!

Any tips on navigating this situation?

When is the right time to ask for a raise in salary? Nearing the end of my first year at current tech startup. We don’t have a formal process to request a merit or cost of living salary increase that I know of… there’s less then 15 people in our company. I made a big no no when joining the company and did not negotiate the salary before accepting. Should I informally chat about future compensation to my boss? He’s a pretty laid back guy and I think he may be flexible with me.

Have you ever taken a paycut before and why? I am a predicament where I could potentially take a 4.75% paycut….company is a great brand that can potentially launch my career even further. I asked if they could increase but they said they tried but can’t. The industry I am in right now is one where I want to get out of…but I’m wondering if it will be worth it to jump ship. Anyone have any personal advice? Thank you

I had a call from a recruiter, and when she asked me what my expected salary is , I said let's negotiate once I learned more about the role, and then I asked her what's their number! She told me about the Salary range. It is very similar to what I found online. Should I say I'm okay with it and move forward or negotiate or add more to that? I'm not in sales, have never been, and never will be. Why don’t they keep this question for sales role to test their negotiation skills! 😒

He has about 8 years of experience selling the same product in an Asian market. They have offered him a base pay of 68k plus some comission (they haven't said what percentage it would be yet). Based on glassdoor, it seems like this is the very bottom of their range. Does this sound fair just because he has no Canadian experience?
