I recently learned that my colleague makes $10k more than I do for the same role and we have the same experience. Completely understand it’s my fault for not doing a great job with negotiating my salary. I’m afraid I’m doomed in my current company & will always be on the lower end of the pay range. Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? If so, please share any negotiation tips! Thank you.
My partner was in this position recently. I told him to:
- chat to his manager about a development plan
- add a timeline to each goal
- agree on additional pay, in this instance I suggested an extra $12k to his salary (I told him not to mention the conversation with his colleague - that could potentially have left a bad taste in his managers mouth)
Make sure it’s formally documented and if you hit those goals, your employer won’t be able to say no to your raise. Good luck!
Thank you!
1. 10k more per month or year ? - if year then it’s really on your negotiation. Otherwise you should feedback to your hrnp on equality concerns.
2. Did he/she join after you or did you both join the company together. - if later it only means the company has a higher budget recently
Per year & we joined at the same time. Thanks for the feedback
I’m in the same position
Shame on your company for not doing another evaluation to ensure that you’re getting paid fairly. They should pay each employee based on the current market value salary + your experience. You should find a company that will value you and also do a good job of paying what you are worth. Always negotiate, if they accept your counteroffer, that means they truly value you. Sometimes companies may not accept a counteroffer because they have experts in the their dept that are reviewing your resume and experience and comparing that to the current market salary and can only offer you you a certain amount within that range. I just don’t know if a lot of corporations have that kind of structure that truly focuses on equity.
