I return to work in October from maternity leave and I’m beginning to panic about going back (remote) because of the amount of people who quit in my group & having to make up for the lack of staff. Anyone have advice on how to balance life with a baby and working crazy hours? Going to start interviewing if I notice it taking a toll… is there any flexibility being a new parent?

Been there. I basically woke up early and got stuff done then took a morning break from 8-9:30 to spend some time with the baby (blocked my calendar). Then worked very efficiently/intensely till 5:30. Block calendar till 8:30 to spend time with baby. Back online from 8:30-10 need be. Repeat. On the weekend, crank during all baby nap times plus after bed time.

I actually felt like I spent a good chunk of time each day with the baby but literally never hung out with my husband which sucked.

Ended up leaving while on maternity leave with my second. Couldn’t imagine how it would work with 2 kids. Life is much better on the outside!

I think that you just have to communicate where you are and what you are capable of at the moment. I always like to find out who the moms are and organization so that you’ll have more support.

Don't work crazy hours. Start interviewing now while on mat leave in case you find an amazing opp. A weekish before you go back call the main partner you work with and tell him I'm willing to work max xx hours a week in order to make things work between this job and family. (For me that's 40)Make sure the number you choose is about 5 hours less than your actual max, and don't budge. This is so when it gets crazy and potentially over scheduled you're at your true max (45 for me) rather than starting at 45 and having people ask for 50 when it's nuts. If he says it's a deal breaker, you've already started interviews and can leave, congrats!

If you're in a high demand area like me (financial services assurance) he should meet your demands, and if not or you don't expect people to respect your time, my firm is hiring for many positions. As far as I know, we've been flexible offering "part time" positions (such as 60 or 80% of regular hours, or 40 hours /week during busy season) to good candidates, and I love helping fellow moms when I can!

Wow thank you so much for that insight! I’m talking to recruiters but they are only willing to look for jobs in NYC not where I moved to (suburbs in NJ). Would love to chat with you. I’m in Financial Services assurance as well and half our group quit so 70 hours is minimum busy season.. and I just can’t handle that anymore 🥴
