I rolled off a project 3 months ago. They keep reaching out and asking me to help onboard new teammates to give them historical knowledge (it’s a long-term project). Do I have to keep doing this? Or does it get to a point where I can say I don’t have the time and there must be someone more recent who can help?

3 months? I think 2-4wks is more standard. If they aren’t doing your promotion conversations tell them you aren’t available.

Tell them firmly you don’t have bandwidth. Move along. You’ll be fine

like

Three months is forever post roll-off. That project isn't your top priority. If you want to continue assisting, use assistance to horse-trade with the requester for something. Otherwise, step away.

like

That seems odd. Are the roles of the more recent joiners a lot narrower than what you did, such that they overlap less with each other than with you? Or they keep having people leave on short notice? It does seem like someone still involved should be able to do this, but if you understand why they’re asking you, maybe you can suggest a better solution.

like

I think it stems mostly from poor management from the project leadership.

Tell them no. They should have someone on the team capable of doing it by now. If the leadership can’t give the historical project context, they’re spending too much time on the golf course.

like

Did you leave behind documentation you can point them too? But yeah I’d point them to other people you’ve trained

Left a very comprehensive document that explains everything under the sun. I’ve tried to do that and they’ll say these people can’t answer all of their questions.

Can I ask what firm? Very curious as this seems to be an increasing issue where I am. I think the turnover is impacting things

You first, then. 😶

Too long, tell them the person you handed everything over, then that you‘re busy on the other project, then start delaying responses / ignoring them.

If they can give you a snapshot/rating/recommendation in year end for the help that you are providing and if that means you will be better rated/better compensated then no problem. Easier way to earn brownies. If that’s not the case, then listen to what others are saying.
