I am a black attorney that does L&E, management side and honestly I wish there were MORE of us who did it. I am a progressive person and for the cases that have merit (because naturally, not all do) I am able to explain to my clients why we need to settle and why they need to change their practices and policies to create a better workplace. I honestly believe I am able to move the needle towards a more equitable world more effectively than plaintiff L&E attorneys. Admittedly, the world isn’t going to be better tomorrow.

It’s going to be hard for Flores to win his lawsuit because his complaint is poorly drafted and realistically it’s going to settle.


Why be dismayed? Loretta Lynch is an equity partner at Paul Weiss. Part of her responsibility is to drum up business with clients that have deep pockets. She is simply doing her job.

This does not mean that what Flores is alleging did not occur. If anything, most cases like this end up settling.

What firms have the least hours? Are there any firms (preferably in South Florida) where the norm where busy season almost never goes over 50 hours a week and the rest is generally 40 hours most of the time?

Husband is being required to go into work one day a week. This week they wanted him and extra day. I have a presentation that extra day so I asked if he could not or move to another day. I can't really decide if this is a sexism or racism thing so help a sista out. Annual company party is coming up, so people are talking about it. During a conversation a senior associate (white man) said "and I think we're all looking forward to seeing (my name) dance" before raising his eyebrows at me. Everyone laughed and I played along but inside I was like ???. For context he's never seen me dance anywhere lmao.


Maybe this is a weird one/I'm over analyzing but here goes:

I got back from NAPABA this week and have felt super inspired and motivated. One of the mid levels in my group (straight white guy) noticed I was in a good mood, even though I've been pulling crazy hours since I got back (we're on a bunch of the same deals). Basically he said "can you share some of that motivation w me? I need some" to which I sort of stumbled over a reply that danced around the fact that I mainly feel good bc NAPABA..


Next week I’m having my first lateral interview as a junior associate. I’m very nervous because the group with whom I’m interviewing works with life science/tech clients and the attorneys have strong science/tech backgrounds; and I do not. However, I am very, very interested in transitioning to this practice. And I reaaally want this job because it’s at my dream firm. How would you recommend preparing for the lateral interview?

Does anyone ever wonder if they are being underpaid at their job? What steps have you taken to gain more clarity?

Things I wish attorneys not of color would realize- when you email over attorneys of color, it just makes the climb harder. I am working with a few seniors who communicate one thing, but when I send out required emails, reply all and communicate another. It is so frustrating because I feel like it discredits me to everyone involved and just makes me look incompetent when I’m following the exact initial instructions.


I work at a firm that is predominantly white. We live in an area that's predominantly Hispanic, but they don't speak Spanish. I do and I'm always used as a translator. It's very annoying because I don't even get brought it on the case. They only want me to translate or talk to witnesses and that's it. It takes me away from my real work. I'm considering removing that I am fluent in Spanish from my resume to not deal with this in the future. Anyone dealt with this before?

I learned that partners of my v5 firm are communicating to associates that I am leaving because I wasn’t cut out for the pace of the firm. I’m leaving (which I refrained from communicating to fellow associates) due to lack of mentorship and toxic management styles (i.e. scolding, being thrown under the bus, etc). Hearing what’s being communicated is particularly distressing since I am a first generation attorney of color and had some of the highest hours on the team. Any tips to address?


I’ve been really struggling with family issues and etc and since I’m prone to depression as it is, it’s taking a toll on my work. No huge mistakes but definitely haven’t been able to take on as much work as I should. I feel like I should bring this up to our lead partner but idk how much to say or if anything at all.


Any other associates deal with partners who use demeaning language? For example a partner and I differ on how a pleading should be done. The partner's response to my version was "this is lazy." Not I think it should be done a different way, but that my work product was lazy. I would love to be a fly on the wall when they are talking to the white associate.

Remember your roots. You’re a minority, and are privileged to be in this field. You are not divine, or a genius, you got lucky. Civil rights giants paved the way for you to step foot in law school. Respect them by lifting your community, and improving our quality of life.

There is plenty of space for all of us, and we are stronger together. Have some empathy for your kin and leave your bigotry at the door.


Tips on dealing with imposter syndromes? Building skills at a small firm? Feel like I can’t do research well in my niche field …

I get called by the name of the only other person of color of my ethnic group in my practice group. We’re both brown women and certain seniors consistently call me by their name, send them emails directed to me, etc. this happens from multiple people. I’ve corrected subtly in the past but after the 10x time, I can’t. I honestly feel that there is underlying unconscious racism behind it. Any tips on how to address?
