I see a a lot of snide comments around PMO. Really curious why do people dislike it? Isn’t it the skills you need to be a senior manager ?

Because
1) most PMOs I have seen don’t take accountability for delivery
2) manage only the plan (milestone dates etc.) but don’t manage project to the plan
3) only mark Red/yellow status updates without having the least understanding of how to Go to Green

In short, they are paper pushers but expect to be treated as everyone’s boss.. thanks but no thanks!

The issue with us in Big4 is this. We think MBB do high impact strategy work, Which they certainly do. But we tend to think the PMO work is not high impact, which it actually is. So we like to devalue ourselves which doesn’t help our colleagues and our own reputation at all. So when a BCGer will go to industry, they will do their best to pull in other BCGer. Will a PwC alum do the same for a fellow PwC consultant? Rarely. So we have ourselves to blame to devalue ourselves and work we do.

I think it's always something that you should be able to do well as you progress in your career but I would say you should be known for something else first I.e. Change management, organization design, technical skill, or industry /functional skill etc.

Because PMO is table stakes. If you are a reasonably competent senior you should be able to do PMO. No one pays $250+/hr for a PMO. They pay for IT, supply chain, M&A, etc experience.

There are a lot of average PMO.. but awesome PMO teams is worth their weight in gold. They actually realize the strategy that previously exist on paper. They help navigate politics, prioritize resources accordingly, make things happen, understand the larger context - it’s like magic. Everyone had great ideas - it’s implementation that most people fall flat on.

Shouldn’t we all have PMO skills?

I think it’s because people dont take it for what it is. PMO’s value is reliable management of a program, product, etc. Stop selling it as “strategy” (my firm does this) and recognize that it’s exactly what the name entails - staff augmentation. You create an overqualified and unhappy workforce of “strategists” when the real job is PMO. Those that want to do PMO will flock if they know exactly what the role entails. Those who don’t - won’t!

How many partners do you know who have only done PMO?

smart

Well..in my opinion, its just common sense and determination to do boring work over and over again.. oh wait!! That's almost every job out there #facepalm

like

SM don't do PMO bc were too busy adult baby sitting, fielding multiple conference calls as I run from one client meeting to another. My job is selling not managing.

like

Because for an analyst it's essentially just copying and pasting slides, taking notes, maybe leading some calls/meetings. Very little analysis or ownership which is why we mostly have new analysts and new SCs do it

like

Being known for only project managing could be done, but I would assume hard to progress

Thanks! Appreciate everyone’s perspective.

P1 nailed it. One of the truer comments I’ve ever seen on FB.

EY has an entire program management practice with several partners.... so... to the comments about whether or not you can make it to partner this way, the answer is yes. Also, senior leaders with decent pm and organization skills tend to be on that struggle status or find others to do it for them

i have a SM who buult his career on being a global program manager. he understands how to go to green,
protect his teams, push back against client,
manage different team in different country, blabla. thats when i realized that a good PMO, makes everyone happy.

Hi! I currently have a H1B amendment application filed for a location change with my current team that is in progress.

I'm interested in a new role with another internal team within my firm. I am concerned about moving forward with this considering another amendment would need to be filed while the existing application is on going. Has anyone faced this situation? Would my new petition have any impact based on the outcome of the previous one considering it is the same firm?
