With a top MBA (I.e HSW) and 5-7 years of MBB, >$4-500K total comp average. PE/VC target.
Staying in consulting will pay more in most cases if you are a partner. Industry jobs won’t hand out millions like MBB does to it’s partners
400k sounds about right for 7 year mark. I doubt the distribution mean for a 5 year mark is anywhere close to that though. The discussion was less about what consultancies pay, but rather about expectations from the industry. I feel many consultants start looking for opportunities with inflated expectations.
@Consultancy OP, yeah I meant exiting into PE/VC, I would expect $400-500K at least. Was just using associate partner pay as benchmark. What do you think people are expecting.
I think you are mistaking goals for realistic expectations I.e. I feel that I am entitled to $500K no matter what after 7 years of MBB after HSW with a PE exit. My goal, however, is to make at least 2x to 10x as much in an exec role, either at an established giant or running my own thing.
No. But targeting VP for 7 years out is (for the size of organization where VP salaries are in that range).
I’m not sure what fundamental issue you see? Three years post MBA is a PL/EM, five and seven years would typically both be an P/AP exit (assuming most people don’t exit the partnership year 1 or 2). People of that tenure leave all the time for different things
Which according to this should be about right if you filter by HSW MBA: https://www.glassdoor.ca/Salary/McKinsey-and-Company-Associate-Partner-US-Salaries-EJI_IE2893.0,20_KO21,38_IL.39,41_IN1.htm
@S1 Maybe PE/VC salaries are that high. Don't forget many exits are corporate. I would be very surprised if at 7 year mark people exiting make that much, on average, across the board. Would love to hear from others.
I don’t know of a lot of folks that leave for a pay cut. But $500K isn’t unreasonable for a VP in the corporate world
