I see a lot of Big 4 Federal jobs open. Is there high attrition or are the roles that hard to fill? What are the pros and cons of Federal work?

Roles that require a clearance can be extremely hard to fill so there’s always plenty of openings there. Work is generally more staff aug than actual consulting. Pay is lower but you can make up most of that difference with a clearance. Hours tend to be much better. I work 5-10 a week on average and am just hanging out at home the rest of the time.

Slightly better WLB compared to commercial, but noticeably less comp (disproportionately so).

Seems my pals in public sector consulting are paid peanuts. Guess the margins are to blame. I’d suggest staying away.

like

I’d imagine the pay is lower. My spouse works for the gov and given what the salary is compared to the same work in the private sector, I can see that being the same for any contractors and consultants. Never been furloughed or concerned about a layoff though.

The multi-billion dollar legislative package + student loan forgiveness are both generating consulting roles. Sure there’s probably attrition, but demand is up.

like

Better WLB, more stability from predictable contracts with set negotiated rates. Lower pay, lower advancement. If it requires a clearance, less extracurricular fun

helpful

and I’m just saying, that’s not the case at Deloitte for role advancement / progression. At the SM level and higher your promotion needs to include pipeline and market viability, but that’s the same in public sector and commercial. (Comp growth is different/lower in public sector until the PMD level. )

Neither—they’re growing really fast and it’s hard for the big players to keep staffed up.

Got an offer to work at a boutique PE fund as an intern for the next few months. The role is however unpaid and the fund is new.

For some background, I’m going to be starting at a T-2 firm doing CDD for PE funds in January. Wondering if getting this kind of experience looks good when I apply to analyst roles 1-2 years out? Don’t want to work without getting paid unless the experience is valuable. Would love any perspective on this.

Do internships count towards years of experience? I held my first design internship in 12th grade (2016), and have since held at least one internship per semester throughout college, all related to my career path - but they were all part time. In my last semester of college (May 2020 grad), I worked as a full time contractor for 18mos. I freelanced after, before working as an FTE the past year.

When asked how many years of experience I have, how should I answer?

Thanks in advance!

Having my weekly crisis here. I feel like I’ve ruined my career by doing insurance defense at the same firm for 8 years. I’ve been aggressively job hunting for six months in this state, I previously took the bar in another state and was job hunting there for over a year. I haven’t had anything come up. The only options seem to be the miserable sweatshop ID shops everyone says to steer clear from. Thinking about a career change to selling cars so I can make more money. Really having a meltdown

Hi guys
Had a query regarding Salesforce strategy roles.

Is it worth trying for strategy roles after 2 years in Tech Strategy projects at EY ? Or is there something more specific that I should be doing ?

Observed on LinkedIn that generally an MBA from Tier 1 University is the norm.

I am interested to apply to Salesforce in the future, if not now.

This was in July 2022. Should I be worried that it won't happen or should I start looking for the switch.?

Additional Posts in Consulting

Post-MBA, 5 weeks into consulting and I hate the weekends. It means I’m one week deeper in the job, and therefore performing another week lower than the level I’m expected to perform at. I have fucked up so much (led a disastrous client meeting, mistakes, slow to answer Qs, etc). My boss is picking up that this isn’t a “new” issue, its a me issue. I try my best to improve but I still feel so anxious, to the point that I started crying at my desk. What do I do? Anyone here quit within a month?
